Most damage to library materials is a result of normal use and abuse including torn pages, broken spines and annotations applied by thoughtless patrons. Occasionally, however, library conservators and preservation specialists encounter surprising, amusing, or outrageous kinds of damage. Below are just a few examples of usual damages encountered recently by preservation staff at CARLI member libraries.

From Postcard Collection (Lewis University) in CARLI Digital Collections Postcards are trophies of travel. It was interesting to explore this digital collection that includes primarily postcards of Joliet, Illinois, a place not far from my own home. Browsing the collection, I came to the realization that the Illinois State Prison was (is?) a tourist destination for visitors to Joliet.

A new podcast, "Selection System 101: Everything you need to know to work with the CARLI Selection System" is now available on the CARLI web site. The 14-minute podcast covers the basics of navigating within the system and the e-resources that are available to the libraries there. (The podcast runs best using the Firefox, Chrome or Safari Internet browsers.)

The CONTENTdm user community is hosting an all-virtual meeting and is looking for participants for brief presentations. Want to show off your digital collections, but no time to prep a formal presentation? Share tips, tricks, or just something fun about your CONTENTdm website with the global community of CONTENTdm users during the first-ever Virtual User Group meeting on November 7, 2012. Though we have proposals for a full slate of excellent in-depth talks, we do have several slots available in our lightning round, which will feature a series of 5-7 minute talks/demos.

The Internet Archive now has over 3.5 million books online including over 6,700 items digitized for the Archive through the CARLI Book Digitization Initiative. More than 40 CARLI member institutions have contributed historical out-of-copyright works, government documents, materials in which their institutions own the copyright, or have partnered with local organizations to digitize materials. All texts are available for free to anyone with an Internet connection.

CARLI recently introduced access to public domain, electronic full-text materials in the HathiTrust collection via the I-Share union catalog. Member libraries are now considering whether to incorporate the same HathiTrust records into default searches of their local catalogs as well.  So the question is: to Hathi or not to Hathi?
