The Purple Parrot (Dec 1949)
What exactly is The Purple Parrot? This question has crossed my mind many times as I’ve searched through some of CARLI’s expansive holdings the past few years. From 1921-1950, The Purple Parrot was essentially Northwestern University’s answer to the Harvard Lampoon, a satirical magazine that skewers student life and cultural events of the time.

Before there was Facebook, there were face books. Unlike yearbooks, comprehensive retrospectives published at the end of an academic year, these books were issued at the beginning of the year as a means of identifying students new to campus.
The 2015 CARLI Annual Meeting will be held Friday, November 13 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Champaign. Staff at any CARLI member library are invited to attend. The meeting, celebrating 35 years of I-Share and 10 years of CARLI, will feature a look back at the original vision for online academic library cooperation in Illinois and a discussion of this cooperation in the present context, an overview of CARLI in 2015, and a discussion about the future of academic libraries, and of CARLI over the next 5-10 years. Why does a library do a video inventory? Should you do a sampling or a complete inventory? Reinvent the process or use tried and true methods? Susan Singleton, CARLI Executive Director and Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, University of Illinois, will retire in July 2016. Singleton, who has held the position since January 2006, was the first Executive Director hired after CARLI was created from the merger of the Illinois Cooperative Collection Management Program (ICCMP), the Illinois Digital Academic Library (IDAL), and the Illinois Library Computer Systems Organization (ILCSO).
