CARLI staff continues to work on the VuFind 2.5 discovery interface for Voyager and are currently tuning performance. We cannot yet predict a release date. When the new interface is ready for beta testing, CARI staff will send an announcement to staff at I-Share libraries via the I-Share Announce, I-Share Directors, and I-Share Liaisons email lists.
During the beta testing, CARLI will seek user feedback on the new interface, and will seek input from your library in order to prioritize possible enhancements or changes. After the beta testing period, each I-Share library will make its own decision about when to switch their local catalog interface from our current installed VuFind 0.6 to VuFind 2.5. CARLI does expect to set an end-date for VuFind 0.6 in order to ensure that the transition to the new interface is complete before the implementation of I-Share Next begins. As with all significant changes, CARLI will provide sufficient advance notice of any final end date in order to allow libraries time to plan for the transition.
The current contract with Lanter Delivery Systems, the vendor that provides delivery service for the Illinois Library Delivery Service (ILDS), will expire on June 30, 2016. A Request for Proposal (RFP) for delivery service beginning on July 1, 2016 has been issued by the University of Illinois. The deadline for RFP responses is December 17, 2015, with the expectation that the final vendor will be selected by early Spring 2016. Additional information is located on the Illinois Procurement Bulletin. We will keep you posted as additional information becomes available.
The Task Force has completed the RFP draft and is now working to craft an "environmental scan" survey that I-Share libraries will need to complete this winter. The survey will gather information about products and services I-Share libraries use in combination with I-Share Voyager. For instance, what products (things like link resolvers, discovery systems, or ILL systems), what equipment (things like self-check machines or automated retrieval systems), and what services (things like data exports to billing systems or data imports from GOBI) do I-Share libraries use now? CARLI staff will compile this information as an Appendix to the I-Share Next RFP. Please start thinking now about what you use in your library. CARLI plans to open the survey within the next few weeks, and to leave it open through February. Please watch for the announcement.

Film–whether motion picture film, cut sheet film, microfilm, (either microform or microfiche), and amateur film–is generally at great risk in most collections. These four kinds of film come in three major materials: nitrate, acetate and polyester. Of these three, most attention will be paid to acetate because it is fragile and common. In contrast, the earliest of these materials, nitrate, while fragile and flammable, is relatively rare. The most recently developed material of film, polyester, though common, is a very stable material and requires less attention.
The four major steps to film preservation are locate the film, identify its material, assess its condition, and choose a preservation storage method based on best practices for condition of film and institutional feasibility. Unfortunately, none of these is easy.
Each year, the State Library collects and analyzes resource sharing and reciprocal borrowing data via the ILLINET Interlibrary Loan and Reciprocal Borrowing Survey (ILL Traffic Survey). The online survey must be completed to report all interlibrary loan and reciprocal borrowing statistics for FY15, which began on July 1, 2014 and ended on July 1, 2015.
The survey must be completed by March 31, 2016, but the State Library urges you to complete it in advance of the certification due date.
If your library includes branches, you should aggregate data for all buildings. If you have already submitted separate statistics, the State Library will aggregate that data. You will need your username and password to get into the survey. If you don’t have that information, please contact Gwen Harrison, or Cyndy Colletti.

Six librarians from Illinois academic and research libraries participated in this year’s “Synergy: The Illinois Library Leadership Initiative” program. The annual program, which is sponsored by the State Library, is designed to identify and train librarians from across the state and a wide spectrum of institutions (academic, public, special) who have demonstrated serious leadership potential. Through the program’s activities, participants examine their own abilities and goals, both professional and personal, while continuing to build relationships with colleagues, through mentoring and other activities. At the same time, participants increase their familiarity with library issues at the local, state, national, and international levels, and they also learn to apply their knowledge to areas outside of librarianship. Participants in this year’s Synergy program met three times, twice in Springfield and then for a final gathering at Starved Rock State Park in Utica. There were 29 total “Synergists”, plus 10 mentors.
Synergists from academic libraries were Gwen Gregory, University of Illinois at Chicago; Yi Han, Illinois Institute of Technology; Sarah McHone-Chase, Northern Illinois University; Ariel Orlov, Adler University; and Sarah Sagmoen, University of Illinois Springfield. Allen Lanham, from Eastern Illinois University, served as a mentor. Visit the website for more information on the program, including instructions for applying (the application for this coming year was not yet available as of mid-October).
The Institute for Research Design in Librarianship (IRDL) 2016, to be held June 5-17, 2016, is seeking novice librarians with a passion for research and a desire to improve their research skills to apply to participate. IRDL is designed to bring together all that the literature tells us about the necessary conditions for librarians to conduct valid and reliable research in an institutional setting. Novice researchers may typically have conducted research but not yet have been the primary author on a published, peer-reviewed article or have presented at a peer-reviewed conference. Librarians of all levels of professional experience are welcome to apply.
Applications will be accepted from December 1, 2015-February 1, 2016. The cohort will be chosen from a selective submission process, which will emphasize enthusiasm for research, and diversity of perspectives, including ethnicity and type and size of library.
For more information, visit the IRDL web site.
The Conference Program Committee invites you to submit a proposal for the 3rd Annual Great Lakes Resource Sharing Conference to be held June 9-10, 2016 at the Sheraton Indianapolis Hotel at Keystone Crossing. This conference is an opportunity for individuals who work in resource sharing to gather information and communicate with other colleagues.
We invite program proposals through January 15, 2016. For additional information, or to submit a proposal, visit the conference web site.
