The mere mention of workplace politics conjures images of scheming colleagues, unscrupulous managers, and associates with duplicitous, Machiavellian intent. While dramatic events, such as these, are certainly a component of politics, they are not the whole story. Politics are a component of human relationships in the workplace, not their entirety. Furthermore, workplace popular culture’s intense focus on melodramatic interpersonal behavior deprives us of a significant opportunity to learn and grow. This presentation will focus on how we can develop our understanding of workplace politics, and how we can use that understanding to build healthy and fulfilling relationships.
