PDA Event: Mindfulness Is Resilience

Thursday, May 27, 2021 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Presented by Jamie Lin, Atla

Our society has an unfortunate tendency to objectify and commodify everything it can. Given all the buzz around “mindfulness” in recent years, it’s not surprising that the term might make you think of self-help, yoga, or chanting. This conversation will invite you to consider mindfulness beyond the framework of bubble baths and scented candles, and explore it within a context of resistance, social justice, and belonging. It will cover a brief history of the adoption and transformation of mindfulness by the West, examine its place within the spiritual path of Buddhism, clear up some general misconceptions, and discuss mindfulness practices in today’s meditation communities, in order to address the question of where mindfulness can fit in our library workplaces and personal lives.

Jamie Lin (she/her) is the Education and Professional Development Manager at Atla, with expertise in the user-centered design of online educational multimedia content. Prior to joining Atla, she worked as a special librarian in corporate research and online higher education.
