This talk presents recent examples of digital humanities research that uses augmented reality and other emerging technologies in unique domains for archival and visualization purposes. Specifically, it will highlight a collaboration using augmented reality between Ohio State design professor Matt Lewis and staff from the Reynolds-Finley Historical Library, an entity of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Libraries. These AR prototypes, and other projects, represent the interrelated connection between education, libraries, and the digital humanities, and how this connection can continue to grow.
Panelists:
Matthew Lewis is an Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University in the Department of Design, the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD), and the Translational Data Analytics Institute (TDAI). Dr. Lewis's research and teaching sits at the intersection of emerging technologies, computer graphics, and generative design, where he creates visualizations, art and design work, and digital tools.
Anna Kaetz is an Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Digital Strategy and Metadata Librarian for the Reynolds-Finley Historical Library of UAB Libraries, where she has assisted with the expansion of the virtual presence of the library and collections for the past two years. Her areas of interest include exploring emerging technologies and specifically their use in library exhibitions and pedagogy; using linked data and descriptive metadata to diversify special collections; and to coordinate the long-term digitization efforts of rare materials.
