PDA Event: AI, Art, and Copyright

You've asked an AI generator to create a cat portrait in the style of Picasso, now what? Although sampling the work of others has been a natural part of image creation since humans have communicated through art, new AI tools have complicated that conversation. This workshop will take a behind-the-scenes look at how these tools are built and discuss the ways that people are using AI generated images to create new bodies of work, streamline their research processes, and beautifully muddy current and future copyright waters. You’ll learn your rights as an image creator, and hopefully have a few more answers about where the machine’s art ends and yours begins. No prior experience with AI or code required! 

Presenters:

Siobhan McKissic is the Visiting Design & Materials Research Librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Their academic research centers around the development of non-traditional resource collections, interactive programming about sustainable design and material culture, and highlighting the histories of underrepresented communities. Siobhan is also an artist whose work considers the interwoven relationships between the Black disabled body, nature, craft, and the built environment.

Dr. Mary Borgo Ton is an Assistant Professor and Digital Humanities Librarian at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She helps researchers and artists use digital tools as they study history, literature, and arts and deepen their creative practice. Her approach to AI is informed by her experience as a business writing instructor and her work in the publishing industry. In her research, she uses machine learning to study the global history of projection.
