CARLI Registration Support for Member Attendance to the OEN's Certificate in Open Education Librarianship Program

Interested in a deeper dive around Open Education or need support in implementing an OER program at your institution from experts? Consider applying for the Open Education Network (OEN) Certificate in Open Education (formerly OER) Librarianship Program.

On October 15 from 9-10 a.m., CARLI will host an information session with CARLI members who have completed this certificate program. They will share their experience and answer your questions about the program. If interested, please register for this program by October 14.

What is the Certificate in Open Education Librarianship Program

The Certificate includes online content, mentor-led cohort meetings, and program development support. A culminating final project helps participants put what they have learned into action. Librarians who successfully complete the eight-month program will receive a Certificate in Open Education Librarianship from the Open Education Network. Participants will:

  1. Gain fluency in defining open education, including its core benefits, challenges, and potential;
  2. Identify local collaborations and alliances that support faculty needs around OER adoption, use, and creation;
  3. Design and build sustainable open education programming based on local considerations, culture, strategic alignment, and goals;
  4. Develop strategies for measuring and articulating the impact of open education on multiple constituents to various audiences;
  5. Connect and collaborate with a cohort of librarians dedicated to developing OER initiatives across the country.

CARLI Funds Available for Member Registration Fees

In support of CARLI member libraries' OER efforts, the Open Educational Resources Committee is pleased to announce that funding is available for up to 5 CARLI member librarians to attend the Open Education Network's Certificate in Open Education Librarianship Program.

How to Receive CARLI Support for this Program

  1. Submit your application to the OEN. by October 25, 2025 at 11:59 p.m., Central Time.
  2. If you are accepted into the OEN Certificate in Open Education Librarianship Program, immediately notify CARLI with a note that you would like CARLI’s Support for the Program. Notify CARLI by sending an email to

On your application, please note that other scholarships are available.

  • The OEN offers general scholarships for attendance. CARLI member librarians SHOULD NOT apply for a general scholarship.
  • The OEN has a number of full scholarships for librarians who are Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC). CARLI member librarians who are Black, Indigenous, or People of Color SHOULD apply for one of these scholarships as the OEN BIPOC scholarships may increase the total number of Illinois librarians that would receive financial support to attend this program.

Acceptance by the OEN is required but does not guarantee CARLI support. CARLI will notify member librarians within seven working days to confirm if CARLI support is available. If more than five applicants are accepted into the program by the OEN and subsequently request CARLI support, the OER Committee will select recipients for this support based on the promotion of geographic and library type diversity. Once approved by the OER Committee, CARLI will reimburse the program registration fees up to $1,050.

In return for CARLI's support of attendance, each librarian attendee must fulfill certain requirements:

  1. Become a trainer for CARLI, joining the cohort of "System Leaders" as trained by OEN
  2. Contribute content for the CARLI Open Illinois Initiative on the CARLI website
  3. Make a presentation to the CARLI membership during a webinar, meeting, or other event about the certificate program
