Library Services Coordinator – CARLI User Services
Serves as front line support for library software and systems (currently Ex Libris Alma, Primo VE, and OCLC's CONTENTdm) that provide mission critical services in Illinois academic libraries. Develops and provides reports, instructional materials, and enhancements to customer service that are proactive, data-driven, and customer-focused. Position Closes: April 13, 2022
Library Services Coordinator – CARLI Electronic Resources
Assists other CARLI staff in maintaining the CARLI database brokering program and in making e-resources available to members. Serves as a contact on projects related to the database brokering and the electronic resources program. Plans and coordinates projects for CARLI's library management system I-Share (currently Ex Libris Alma) and specifically electronic resources in consultation with CARLI staff and member libraries. Senior Library Services Coordinator – CARLI System Services
Leads major information technology/systems projects affecting the operations of CARLI libraries, including installation, technical support, and upgrade of state-of-the-art library systems that enable statewide sharing of library materials and electronic resources, including support of Ex Libris Alma and Primo VE, OpenAthens identity service, and management of Amazon Web Services (AWS) architecture. CARLI is seeking nominations for candidates to fill seats on the CARLI Board of Directors, the governing authority of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois.
CARLI Governing Members will elect one Board member from each of three specified constituencies (public universities, community colleges, and private colleges and universities). Candidates receiving the most votes for each constituency will serve three-year terms, July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2025.
A Board member will also be elected to fill a mid-term opening in the private university constituency to a two-year term, July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2024.
Only the director of a CARLI Governing Member institution is eligible to serve on the Board of Directors. The director is defined as the person who is operationally responsible for the staff, services, and budget of the library, with titles that include, but are not limited to, Director, Dean, Chair, or Head Librarian.
Members of the CARLI community may nominate themselves or others (permission of the nominee is required when nominating others) by filling out the online nomination form.
All nominations will be reviewed and a slate of candidates developed by the CARLI Nominating Committee comprising: Taran Ley (Southern Illinois University School of Medicine), Matt Ostercamp (North Park University), Shannon Pohrte (Elgin Community College), Anne Craig (CARLI), and Margaret Chambers (CARLI).
The nomination period will close at 5 p.m., Friday, April 1, 2022.

It is with bittersweet feelings that we announce that Gordon Fellows, Assistant Director System Services and Kristine Hammerstrand, Director User Services, will be retiring. Kris will complete her service the last day of May and Gordon will be retired as of July 1.
Between the two of them, they have 70+ years of service to CARLI! While it’s difficult to imagine CARLI and I-Share without them, they are excited and very much looking forward to this next step. We have set up two kudos boards so our member library staff can add their voices to our celebration of Kris and Gordon's accomplishments and contributions to our consortium.

Featured article: Paschke-Wood, J., Dubinsky, E., & Sult, L. (2020). Creating a Student-Centered Alternative to Research Guides: Developing the Infrastructure to Support Novice Learners. In the Library with the Lead Pipe
Article Summary: The authors explored patron interactions with LibGuides to determine how effectively subject-specific guides support completion of coursework and student research. An examination of the existing literature, and usage data from University of Arizona, showed that students are often hindered by specialized terms and problems with navigation, and they most often gravitate toward guides dealing with a specific topic or course. The article outlines the authors’ redesign of FAQ pages and guides and their rationale for the changes—based on a need for clarity, simplicity, and context, as well as a focus on student-led research processes.

The CARLI Public Services Committee invites members to a panel and discussion about Controlled Digital Lending (CDL) on April 21, 11 a.m.–noon.
In this virtual event, panel presenters from different types of academic libraries will share information about how they considered the use of CDL. We will then have a question and answer period with the panelists and a discussion of CDL in CARLI libraries.
Rooted in the fair use right of United States Copyright Act, CDL is the digital equivalent of traditional physical library lending - a library can digitize a book it owns and lend out a secured digital version to one user at a time, in place of the physical item.
Controlled Digital Lending has three important core principles:

The CARLI Resource Sharing Committee's April Discussion will focus on Proxies and the ways three different libraries set them up and use them.
"Three Libraries Present Three Ways to Set up Proxies in Alma" will be presented on Friday, April 22 from 11 a m–noon.
Depending on local policies and patron needs, some libraries allow their users to designate another user to perform some circulation functions on their behalf. There are several ways to set up proxies in Alma, three of which will be discussed in this webinar.
While each presenter will include examples from local procedures and policies, the content will be applicable in a variety of library settings. Afterwards, we want to hear from you, too!

The CARLI E-Resources Selection System is now open for FY23 (July 1, 2022–June 30, 2023) subscription commitments. An announcement will be sent to the CARLI E-Resource contact list when the system is open for libraries. The Selection System will close on May 13, 2022.
Selection System logins are set up for the primary e-resources contact at CARLI member institutions. Your login is your e-mail address. To reset your password, you can go to the selection system link, enter your e-mail address, and select "I don’t know my password." If additional staff at your library need access to the Selection System, the library director or e-resource liaison should send the request to CARLI Support.
Libraries should be careful to commit to electronic resource subscriptions for FY23 only when adequate funding is assured.
After the Selection System closes on May 13, 2022, database selections become final and binding. Preliminary billing estimates will be sent to libraries for review, and subscription lists will be submitted to vendors after this date. Service for the FY23 subscribers will be effective on July 1, 2022 and final invoices will be sent to subscribing libraries after July 1, 2022.
Based on feedback from several libraries, CARLI has worked out a contract with MLA for MLA Handbook Plus, which will be available for subscription through the System. Additional information about participating vendors, products, and pricing was sent to the e-resource contact list last week.
CARLI's Commercial Products Committee will be hosting an Accessibility in Libraries Forum on Wednesday April 6, 10 a.m.–noon. We will have four short presentations followed by question/discussion time. Topics covered include ebook accessibility, accessibility technology, library policies, and accessibility in licensing.

The Evolving Library School Curriculum

In the last few years, library schools have re-evaluated their offerings to ensure that a graduate level education aligns with the skills needed for the field. It requires striking a balance between the theories that underpin our profession and what it all looks like in practice. These changes may involve opening up more choices, allowing students to pick specialized tracks. In some cases, it may involve getting rid of some required courses altogether. Panelists from four library schools across the country will share what they have done to adapt their curriculum and what it means for the future of the profession.

Intentionally Recruiting for Diversity in Librarianship

The Diverse Librarianship Career and Training and Education Program is a call to action in response to the serious lack of diverse representation in library and information science professions. This grant project aims to create a pathway model for breaking down barriers in recruitment and retention of diverse librarians by introducing high school seniors to librarianship. Through collaboration and innovation, libraries can ensure their espoused DEIA values are values in action.

Director Series: Effective Ways to Onboard New Employees
May 11, 2–3 p.m.
What outcomes are we trying to achieve with new employee onboarding, and who is ultimately responsible for achieving those outcomes? Effective onboarding has been shown to be a major factor in long-term work satisfaction for employees, and it is strongly correlated with likelihood of turnover in the first year on the job.
Despite its importance, most organizations and managers give little thought to exactly how an employee's first day, week, and month should proceed.
In this session, speaker Ben Mead-Harvey will discuss his recommendations for the most effective way to onboard new employees, broken into three categories: welcome elements, training with the team, and check-in meetings. He will give a detailed breakdown of each element and spend time explaining the basis for each recommendation.
Ben Mead-Harvey is an instructor at the University of Illinois, where he teaches courses on Personnel Management and Financial Management of Libraries. He's also the author of better-boss.com, a blog about managing people effectively.

CARLI is pleased to offer this 3-week synchronous and asynchronous course on open educational resources May 17, 24, and 31 from 11a.m.–12:30 p.m.. Attendees should plan to attend each of the three live sessions.
This virtual course is designed to help the novice person learning about open educational resources to apply the information from this program to build their own local programs and workshops. The program is open to all CARLI members.
The virtual program will contain both synchronous (three live 90-minute Zoom sessions) and asynchronous (readings, videos, etc.) to be completed before each live session. The live sessions will include presentations, but the aim of the program planners is that these will incorporate a flipped classroom model to build community among participants as all share and discuss the topics.

CARLI is pleased to partner with the IACRL Conference and Continuing Education Committee to showcase the Open Illinois Hub at the Spring IACRL Spark Program on April 1,10 a.m.–Noon. Registration is available to library workers from all libraries in Illinois!
We are excited to highlight this tool that will help to bring OER to more institutions across Illinois.
After this presentation, there will be unconference style breakout rooms for attendees to engage in conversations about OER, DEI, and where they intersect. We hope this offers attendees an opportunity to ask questions, make connections with other librarians, gain valuable insight, and discover where our barriers exist with these topics. With information from the report outs, we intend to create future programming to help fill any gaps identified.
What is the Open Illinois Hub?
The Open Illinois Hub facilitates the use of Open Educational Resources (OER) and supports training, advocacy, and coordination of cooperative efforts for the benefit of CARLI members, and other Illinois stakeholders. This centralized repository provides materials helpful to academic and research institutions in developing OER and advocating for adoption of OER on their campuses to reduce students' costs.
By combining resources from many CARLI member institutions into a seamless environment, faculty, staff, students, and the public can search across Illinois institutions and collections.
CARLI has established an email list for CARLI members to discuss and learn more about Open Educational Resources. Any person from a CARLI institution may subscribe to the list.
CARLI staff have shared with non-I-Share Members via OCLC Collection Manager the WMS collection "Oxford Scholarship Online: 2022 Publications ". The WMS Collection ID is "OUP.oso2022. " The titles in this collection have been added to the Alma Network Zone for I-Share members and are available to users via Primo VE.

CARLI is excited to share that there will be an FY23 CARLI Ebook Program. CARLI is working with Wiley and Oxford University Press to identify what access collections will be available to all Governing Members. More information will be shared when it is confirmed.
Over the course of the last year, CARLI and Ex Libris have been engaged in ongoing discussions about CARLI's bibliographic title count in Alma, which, along with the Alma named user count and the count of unique e-journals, comprise the primary billing metrics used by Ex Libris to set Alma pricing. We are pleased to be able to report that CARLI and Ex Libris have reached an understanding about how bibliographic titles will be counted in I-Share that takes advantage of bibliographic title record sharing through our consortial Alma Network Zone and e-resource record sharing via the customer-wide Alma Community Zone.
Specifically:
We are delighted to report that this clarified understanding puts the CARLI consortium well within our current Alma contractual number of bibliographic titles. Additionally, it provides further incentive for our consortial efforts to reduce record duplication in Alma. Using a shared consortial bibliographic record whenever appropriate, helps keep our title count from becoming inflated and improves discovery and resource sharing of materials held by multiple I-Share institutions. While this is a very favorable outcome for our consortium, we are also mindful that managing bibliographic data is an ongoing activity for all I-Share libraries, and that it can be challenging to know where to begin or how to keep up with this work. If your library staff need assistance in this area, we encourage you to attend our ongoing Alma Primo VE Open Office Hour webinars, and/or our Tech Services Q&A sessions (see the CARLI Calendar for upcoming dates). These sessions always include time for questions from attendees and provide a friendly environment where other library staff share their suggestions along with the CARLI staff. If your institution would benefit from a more in-depth consultation, please send us a note at CARLI Support and briefly describe your concern. We will do our best to assist you and direct you to resources to help you address your situation.

We would also like to take this opportunity to remind you of some resources that are always available for your reference when you are experiencing an Alma or Primo VE problem that has you wondering if the problem may be impacting more than just your library.

Also, staff at any I-Share library may sign up on the Ex Libris System Status page for email updates. CARLI also posts outages on the CARLI website, via the System Status section of the home page and via https://www.carli.illinois.edu/system-status.
It has been almost two years since our go-live in Alma and Primo VE and CARLI wants to hear about how things are going in your day-to-day work with these systems. Staff at the CARLI Office have created a survey to gather information about how you are doing and where you might need more help. As individual experiences and confidence in using Alma vary, please respond as an individual, not as a summary for your library. We encourage and welcome multiple people from each I-Share institution to respond. We will use your feedback to inform new documentation and plan future training events.

The survey is organized by functional areas within Alma, with the understanding that most responders will indicate that some of the functional areas are not applicable to them. We estimate it should take no more than 15 minutes to complete the survey.

After creating your institution's disaster plan it may seem like a good idea to give yourself a pat on the back and tell yourself and your colleagues "Job well done!" Certainly, this is a good first step, but your next step should be to consider planning a tabletop exercise to see, in a controlled setting, just how good your plan really is. Tabletop exercises are guided sessions led by a facilitator(s) to simulate an emergency. These sessions allow staff specified in the disaster plan to discuss and better understand their role during various disasters.

April 11, 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the Rebecca Crown Library's opening and dedication! The current Rebecca Crown Library staff and faculty are thrilled and honored to celebrate this milestone at Dominican University. As part of the anniversary festivities there are several events and programs that highlight the construction, history, and future of the library building, and honor the many students and employees who have brought the space to life over the years. Anniversary events also consider the significant history of the Phyllis Skiffington Noonan Reading Room - the original library on the River Forest Campus.

The conference is scheduled for Wednesday, September 7 - Friday, September 9, at Starved Rock Lodge & Conference Center in Utica, IL.
