Congratulations to the CARLI I-Share Migration Team!

We are pleased to share with you that the CARLI I-Share Migration Team has been selected as the 2021 Distinguished Employee Leadership and Team Award (DELTA) recipient by the University of Illinois System. This annual award recognizes University of Illinois System office employees for their exceptional accomplishments, service and dedication. Please join us in congratulating them on this well-deserved award! 

Ex Libris Planned Outage May 29–30, 2021

Ex Libris will be moving their data center May 29–30, 2021, which is Memorial Day weekend, and all services running out of that facility will be offline for approximately 24 hours. This data center includes server NA06, which is where CARLI's Alma, Primo VE, and Leganto operate. These products will go offline at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 29, and service is expected to be restored by 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 30. 

Ex Libris held a webinar regarding the planned outage on April 26. You can view a recording of this webinar or the webinar slides for more information.

Anyone trying to connect to these services during the outage will see a message about the services being temporarily unavailable. During the outage, Ex Libris will post any updates to their status page. From that page, you can also subscribe to receive email status alerts from Ex Libris by clicking the envelope icon next to the Alma NA06 and/or Primo VE NA06 Instances. 

In addition to the forthcoming Ex Libris email announcement and webinar, Ex Libris has developed additional information resources about the data center move. You can find an FAQ and an article about options for adding text to Primo VE about the planned outage and for handling circulation calendars and due dates.

CARLI has added this planned downtime to our website calendar. Should there be any changes to these plans, or if the downtime is longer than anticipated, we will share updates to the I-Share email lists.

CARLI Scholarship for Staff at Member Libraries

Apply by June 30, 2021 for the CARLI Scholarship. This scholarship helps to grow the profession by providing financial assistance to current employees of CARLI Governing Member Libraries pursuing graduate studies leading to a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Scholarships may be awarded for both on-campus and/or distance education programs. The scholarship amount for the 2021–2022 academic year (August 2021–May 2022) will be $1,000. We are now accepting applications. The deadline to apply is June 30, 2021.
 
We would like to thank our donors for their generous contributions to the scholarship. You can give to the scholarship fund online. The minimum donation is $5.00. We hope you will consider supporting future librarians and help CARLI grow the profession with a contribution.

Fair Use Gameshow

Are you interested in fair use, but not interested in long lectures on the topic? Would you like to test your fair use knowledge and have some fun? If the answer to either or both of these questions is yes, then join us on May 4, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. as we play the Fair Use Gameshow. Your host, Sara Benson, the Copyright Librarian at the University of Illinois will ask fun, challenging fair use questions to the audience and our panel of esteemed copyright experts will chime in with their opinions. Join the fun as the panel including Melissa Ocepek, Assistant Professor at the iSchool, Pia Hunter, Access Librarian and Online Learning Consultant at the University of Illinois College of Law, and Barbara Kaplan, Faculty Outreach Librarian at the University of Illinois College of Law discuss the many nuances of fair use.

Striving for Excellence, Achieving Perfection: What Went Wrong?

Leaders and team members aim to attain goals, to meet objectives, and please all of their stakeholders and employees along the way. This May 18 webinar will focus on a key leadership distinction: excellence versus perfection, and how a leader or team member’s overall effectiveness is influenced by how aware they are of their own inclination (and that of their team members) toward each dimension. The discussion will cover:

• What does it mean to be an "excellent leader or team member" versus a "perfect leader or team member"? What happens to a team member or leader, and the organization they support when their journey toward excellence diverges to a quest for perfection?
• How metrics and key performance indicators can work for, and against a team member or leader's effectiveness. And, how might one shape these important measures to motivate toward excellence.
• Coaching team members who may be seeing the pursuit of perfection as a surrogate for achieving excellence. How to help them view their own contributions through the lens of excellence, and to help them refocus their efforts and energy accordingly.

Presenter Garry Sanders is Principal, AssistLeadership, LLC and is an Executive Coach having earned a Certificate in Leadership Coaching from Georgetown University, and the designation of Professional Certified Coach by The International Coaching Federation. He is coaching leaders and team members at universities, businesses, and government agencies around the United States. He says that he "practices imperfection daily."

Two-Part Series: The Application of 3D Printing Services in the Academic Library

Driven to democratize access to emerging technologies and the knowledge it affords, the academic library is well positioned to provide access to 3D Printing services to support the design learning pedagogy in higher education. Additive manufacturing technologies allow you to design, 3D print, and test your design in real time.

Join Elisandro Cabada in this 2-part series held on May 26 and June 9 from 10:00–11:00 a.m. CST to learn about 3D Printing and develop an understanding for how the technologies can be implemented in the academic library.

Elisandro Cabada is an Assistant Professor and the Medical and Bioengineering Librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he provides emerging technology services to support higher education. His research interests include studying the barriers to access, pedagogical affordances, and application of emerging and immersive technologies in research and instruction. Elisandro is a recipient of the 2021 Best Emerging Technology Award, awarded by the ALA RUSA Emerging Technologies Section.

Make Your FY22 E-Resources Selections

The Selection System is open through May 7 for FY22 (July 1, 2021–June 30, 2022) subscription commitments using the CARLI e-resources selection system. Several vendors are retaining static pricing again this year. 

Logins are set up for the primary e-resources contact at CARLI member institutions. Your login is your email address. To reset your password, you can go to the selection system link, enter your email address, and select "I don’t know my password".  

Libraries should be careful to commit to electronic resource subscriptions for FY22 only when adequate funding is assured. 

After the Selection System closes on May 7, 2021, database selections become final and binding. Preliminary billing estimates will be sent to libraries for review and subscription lists will be submitted to vendors after this date. Service for FY22 subscribers will be effective on July 1, 2021 and final invoices will be sent to subscribing libraries after July 1, 2021. 

This cycle contains Syndetics Unbound for your library catalog. If you are interested in setting up a trial before July 1, contact Joe DeAngeleis. CARLI User Services can also assist with set up.

Additionally, Ovid is offering a new eleven month subscription to a select group of databases for the price of a six month subscription. Information about the databases available for this offer was sent out to the e-resources contacts listserv. If you would like more information, please reach out to CARLI Support or fill out this form.

Oops! The Pandemic Made Me Do It Again: Digital Displays & Escape Rooms

During the CARLI Public Services Commmittee's April 23 session of the ongoing discussion series, Oops! The Pandemic Made Me Do It Again, two CARLI member libraries presented on how they engaged with their students online during 2020-2021. Presentations are available online at the URLs listed below.

Amy Chellino from Joliet Junior College presented how she and her colleagues transformed their physical displays into digital alternatives with their Take Five programming. The Take Five Digital Displays are developed by themes that use five categories to showcase five library and online resources for the theme in each category.

Amy’s Prezi presentation, "Take Your Displays Online with Take 5," is available online.

Leslie Starasta from Lincoln Christian University shared how her library transformed their new student orientation from an in-person program into an interactive online escape room. She noted that Ellyssa Kroski's article, "How to Create Free Digital Breakouts for Libraries," in ALA's Library Technology Reports, was very helpful in developing the new programming. 

Lincoln Christian University's online escape room, "Ticket to Discovery: Library Orientation" is available online as well as Leslie's presentation slides.  

Other Library News

IACRL Spark Event

The IACRL Conference & Continuing Education Committee is pleased to announce its next Spark event: Looking Back, Looking Forward via Zoom.

The committee is seeking proposals in the theme of preparing for a post-pandemic future. Topics to consider include:

• Practices/services adopted during the pandemic you wish to sustain afterwards
• Lessons learned from transitioning back to in-person after a closure
• Considerations for possibly moving back to in-person in the fall
• Hybrid methods for online instruction
• Flipped classrooms
• Other thoughts on handling post-pandemic life in your library

Proposals on other topics will also be considered as space allows. Presenters will give 10-minute lightning talks on their topics. After a set of lightning talks, attendees will go into breakout rooms to network and discuss the lightning round topics, and will have the opportunity to ask questions of the presenter in their breakout room. Participants will also be able to discuss their own experiences and ideas with one another.

If you are interested in presenting, please submit a proposal by Friday, May 21. The schedule will be finalized no later than May 28.

Librarians from all libraries in Illinois are welcome to attend, register now!
