Every year CARLI staff prepares a customized analysis of the monetary value realized by each CARLI Governing member library as a result of its CARLI membership. There are three components to the analysis: an itemization of the funds invested by the library, a calculation of the cost to the library to provide or replace the products and services received through CARLI, and a calculation of the library's return on its investment.
The 2020 CARLI value letters and value graphics were sent to all Governing Directors by email on Wednesday, December 9. Please let us know if you haven’t received your letter and we will resend the email.
If you would like more information about the way the value letter is calculated, please see "Membership Value" .

Kathryn Harris, formerly division manager for library services at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, has been selected as the 2020 State Journal-Register First Citizen Award winner. The award recognizes Springfield-area residents who give selflessly of their time and resources in service to others.
Save the date, February 16, 2021, to join Harris for her portrayal of Harriet Tubman as a part of CARLI‘s Professional Development Alliance offerings.
If you could step back in history, with whom would you like to have a conversation and lunch?
If Harriet Tubman is your choice, please join Kathryn Harris as she presents her first-person presentation as "Harriet Tubman". Harriet Tubman is perhaps the most famous Conductor on the Underground Railroad and Ms. Harris tells her life story, including not only her own escape to freedom, but also the trips she made back South to free her family and others so that they could also experience the "sweet taste of freedom".
On December 4, the CARLI Board of Directors approved a proposal from the CARLI staff, in consultation with the CARLI Resource Sharing Committee, to extend the term (i.e., fixed) due date for all I-Share resource sharing loans, i.e., where the patron is borrowing an item from another I-Share library though Alma and Primo VE, from the current setting of February 1, 2021, to May 7, 2021. These settings will be changed for every I-Share library by the CARLI office staff in late December, 2020.
Unlike in fall 2020, we will NOT do bulk renewals on all items that currently have the February 1, due date. Patrons in good standing whose Alma user record has an expiration date later than February 1, may be able to renew these materials themselves.
CARLI is surveying the I-Share libraries to see if they would like to also use the new term due date of May 7 for their local circulation (their patrons/their items) and have CARLI apply that setting, or if they would like to use an alternative fixed due date of their choice, or to use their Terms of Use policies to determine due dates.
Also, as a reminder, the new consortial policy that stops fining for overdue materials (with the exception of some restricted loan collections such as equipment and reserves) and eliminates the charging of processing fees on lost material billings goes into effect January 1, 2021.
During 2020-2021, the CARLI Preservation Committee is gathering snapshots from the diverse range of perspectives of CARLI member institutions to explore various responses to the pandemic. With specific institutional action, impacts on preservation practices, and keeping up with developing information, we hope that these snapshots will provide the broadest range of responses to shed some light on how our work can continue as well as to provide a record of how libraries responded during this unprecedented time.
This month, Ellen Keith, Chicago History Museum Director of Research and Access and Chief Librarian, shares her experience.
