We hope you will join us for the Virtual CARLI Annual Meeting on November 13 via Zoom! Please see the event page to view the agenda for the day and to register.
On November 12 the Governing Directors Meeting will also be held virtually as a part of the regularly scheduled Governing Directors Check-in Sessions. Although registration is not required for the informal discussions that have been held the last several months every other Thursday, registration is requested for this meeting.
This is a final reminder that CARLI will discontinue running SFX on October 30. We hope at this time you have taken these steps to prepare for SFX shut down.
CARLI will continue running SFX until October 30, 2020. This is dependent on the ongoing health of the physical server systems in our Urbana data center. If one of the physical systems should suffer a catastrophic failure before the planned shutdown, CARLI staff may not be able to fix it.
Please email CARLI Support with any questions.
For ILDS locations who are currently receiving delivery, RAILS will be closed on November 3 for election day, and will not be providing delivery service. IHLS will be open and making deliveries on November 3.
If you are unsure which library system handles your delivery, you can look that information up online by searching for your library on the L2 website. On your library's page above "Resource Sharing" there should be a link to the system that handles your delivery.
ILDS will also observe holidays on Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27 and delivery service will not be provided. Service will resume on Monday, November 30.
The CARLI Resource Sharing Committee second discussion in their monthly discussion series: CARLI Resource Sharing in our New Age: Alma Digitization Dos and Don’ts will be held on November 20 at 11 a.m.
There will be a presentation on configuring digitization requests and things to think about regarding workflow, with Ashtin Trimble of Black Hawk College and Sarah McHone-Chase of Northern Illinois University.
Grab a beverage, bring your thoughts and feedback, and join us so we can learn together and support each other!
Please register for this session. If you are unable to attend watch for the video of the discussion which will be posted to the CARLI website.
In support of CARLI member libraries' OER efforts, the Open Educational Resources Committee is pleased to announce that funding has been made available for up to 5 CARLI member libraries to attend the Open Education Network's Certificate in OER Librarianship Program.
Member librarians interested in the CARLI support program should immediately notify CARLI following acceptance into the program from the OEN by sending an email to CARLI Support. Acceptance by the OEN is required but does not guarantee CARLI support; after OER Committee review, CARLI will notify member librarians within seven working days about whether CARLI support is available for their participation. If more than five applicants are accepted into the program by the OEN and subsequently request CARLI support, the OER Committee will select recipients for this support program based on the promotion of geographic and library type diversity. Once approved by the OER Committee, each of the up to five attendees would receive funding up to $850 for the program registration fee.
In return for CARLI's support of attendance, each librarian attendee must fulfill certain requirements:
If you have questions, please send an email to CARLI Support.
Submit your application to the OEN.
Please note: The OEN offers partial financial assistance based on need to applicants who apply for it and scholarship opportunities for Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC) librarians. CARLI member librarians should apply as these programs could supplement consortial attendance.
For questions about available scholarships or other questions about the OEN Certificate in OER Librarianship, please see their Frequently Asked Questions.
CARLI is pleased to present this 3-week synchronous and asynchronous course on open educational resources. Two options for attending this workshop will be offered in December 2020. This program will be offered multiple times throughout the year.
Option 1: Live Sessions on December 2, 9, 16 at 1:00 p.m.–2:15 p.m.
Option 2: Live Sessions on December 3, 10, 17 at 11:00 a.m.–12:15 p.m.
This virtual course includes material that was first shared with the CARLI membership during the Open Textbook Network Train-the-Trainer workshops in Spring 2018, and is designed to help the novice person learning about open educational resources to apply the information from this program to build their own local programs and workshops. The program is open to all CARLI members including those that attended the 2018 program.
The virtual program will contain both synchronous (three live 75-minute Zoom sessions) and asynchronous (readings, videos, etc.) to be completed before each live session. The live sessions will include presentations, but the aim of the program planners is that these will incorporate a flipped classroom model to build community among participants as all share and discuss the topics.
Attendees should plan to attend each live session for either Option 1 or Option 2. The content of each option will be the same; those interested will register for one option only.
Registration is available until November 18 or until the courses are full. Course materials will be sent to registrants on November 19. Please contact CARLI Support if you have questions.
The selection system is currently open for calendar year 2021 through November 6, please get your choices entered soon. This cycle includes products from AAAS, ACS, AMS, ACM, Artstor, Duke University Press, Johns Hopkins University Press, JSTOR, Sage, and Wiley.
If you worked with CARLI staff to move your Sage CQ products to CARLI billing, please double-check your pricing, as we have seen a few errors.
If you want to select the Sage E-Reference fee but are unable to make the selection in the system, send a ticket to CARLI Support and CARLI staff will add it to your selections.
If you have questions or need a login, email CARLI Support.
We continue to work on the renewal of our license with the American Chemical Society, which has just been sent to University Purchasing.
Try-It! The Professional Development Alliance continues to offer programs on a variety of subjects. Here is what is coming so far during November and December.
Please check the CARLI calendar for additions to these programs.
We want to hear from you! If you have a topic you would like to see as a continuing education program, send your idea to CARLI Support.
Attention reference and instruction librarian staff! The CARLI Counts Technical Services team is investigating how you perceive the value of enhanced cataloging upon the process of identifying resources for a student and they need your input. Please take about 10 minutes of your time to fill out their survey, "Perceived Value of Cataloging in Identifying Resources for Students". This team of librarians is part of the second cohort of CARLI Counts, a three-year project funded by an IMLS grant that prepares academic librarians to make effective use of research findings on the impact of student success.
You are being invited to participate in a survey research study. Your participation is voluntary which means you can choose whether you want to participate. You may withdraw at any time without penalty.
Project Title: Perceived Value of Cataloging in Identifying Resources for Students
Principal Investigator: Tammie Busch – Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
Co-Investigators: Mary Konkel - College of Dupage, Susan Howell – Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Mingyan Li – University of Illinois at Chicago, Ross Taft – Illinois State Library, Cathy Mayer – Lake Forest College, Dennis Krieb – Lewis & Clark Community College
The purpose of this survey is to assist a team of technical services librarians in investigating how reference and instruction librarians and staff perceive the value of enhanced cataloging upon the process of identifying resources for a student. This team of librarians is part of the second cohort of CARLI Counts, a three-year project funded by an IMLS grant that prepares academic librarians to make effective use of research findings on the impact of student success. This survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Potential Risks: It is expected that participation in this study will provide you with no more than minimal risk or discomfort which means that you should not experience it as any more troubling than your normal daily life. While there are no direct benefits to participating, your response will help us to better understand the research topic.
Potential Benefits: The survey results will help librarians and staff with cataloging responsibilities better understand what bibliographic information is most helpful to reference and instruction librarians and staff in locating resources for students. The study results will also help librarians and staff with cataloging duties learn what bibliographic information they should prioritize when cataloging resources.
Confidentiality: CARLI Counts will not be collecting any personal information for the study. All responses to this survey are anonymous and confidential. Your name or identity will not be linked in any way to the research data. If you have any questions about your rights or any other concerns, you may contact the SIUE Institutional Review Board at (618) 650-3010 or irbtraining@siue.edu.

The top item this month is a reminder that the CARLI staff plan to take Voyager and SFX offline permanently at 5 p.m., on Friday October 30, 2020. We hope that by now you are completely cutover to Alma and Primo VE for your operations, but it might be worth checking the links on your webpages to make sure they are all up to date. Also, just to be clear, this means that you will no longer be able to access the VuFind public catalog interfaces or WebVoyage (these will both redirect to a menu at https://i-share.carli.illinois.edu where one can select an I-Share institution to search via PrimoVE). You will also no longer be able to run Access or web reports on Voyager data. This is also a good time to uninstall any Voyager staff clients you still have on your computers. Additionally, if you configured OCLC WorldCat to link to Voyager, be sure to switch those settings as well.
Some institutions have asked us to export a copy of their Voyager data for the library to retain. We are able to export the data in csv (comma separated value) format and provide that to you via our SFTP files server. If that is of interest, please send an email to us at CARLI Support.
Speaking of our SFTP files server, while we are going to continue to provide this service for the long term, we are moving it from a CARLI-managed server to the Amazon cloud. That change will happen on Wednesday, November 4 at 9 p.m. CST. While the server will still have the name files.carli.illinois.edu, the server's IP address will change from 192.17.55.196 to 3.22.214.105. If your institution relies on egress firewall configuration settings in order to access files.carli.illinois.edu, please alert your networking department staff of this upcoming IP address change.
The November Alma and Primo VE monthly software update will be installed by Ex Libris on Sunday, November 1, 2020. The November release is expected to include some additional response time improvements as well as some fixes we have been anticipating including a correction to the Hold Shelf letter, and a fix that addresses some of the issues we were having with links to online resources not being displayed in full record views. Ex Libris posts release notes in their Knowledge Center documenting the changes and fixes coming each month and we encourage you to refer to the Alma notes and Primo VE notes. We also want to remind you that CARLI maintains a selective list of known Alma issues.
If you are using Alma Analytics (reporting) please note that Ex Libris is continuing to migrate from running on Oracle Business Intelligence 11 (OBI) to Oracle Analytics Service (OAS). They have been migrating server by server, and the Alma server I-Share runs on, called NA06, will be migrated to OAS the week of November 1-8, 2020. Please note that if you have used Analytics and saved any reports in "My Folder" that you will need to move those reports to another folder before November 1. Also, if you create or modify any reports, not just ones in "My Folder" during the Nov. 1-8 period, those changes will not be kept. For more on the Analytics migration see the Ex Libris FAQ and CARLI’s instructions for copying your "My Folder".
Please note that due to the extra Thursday in October and Thanksgiving in November, the every other Thursday Open Office Hours will be held only once next month on November 12. Please continue to watch your email and the CARLI calendar for other events and learning opportunities.
For 2020-2021, the CARLI Preservation Committee is gathering snapshots from the diverse range of perspectives of CARLI member institutions to explore various responses to the pandemic. With specific institutional action, impacts on preservation practices, and keeping up with developing information, we hope that these snapshots will provide the broadest range of responses to shed some light on how our work can continue as well as to provide a record of how libraries responded during this unprecedented time.
This month, Jennifer Hain Teper, Head of Preservation Services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, shares her experience.
