Fiscal Year 2021 CARLI Research Funding Program

We are pleased to announce the availability of the Fiscal Year 2021 CARLI Research Funding Program. Approved by the CARLI Board of Directors at their December 2019 meeting, this program provides funding up to $4,999 to CARLI Governing Member Libraries to support staff and faculty with the intention of spurring research and innovation that support the CARLI Strategic Priorities. Proposals will be accepted from both individuals and those working collaboratively with others in their own organization or other CARLI Governing Member Libraries.

Projects should have the potential to positively affect libraries and the library profession; have the potential to provide a useful addition to the existing literature; and results of the research should be of interest to or of use by other CARLI Governing Member Libraries.

Applications for the FY 2021 Program are due May 15, 2020. 

Fiscal Year 2021 CARLI Professional Development Reimbursement Program

We are also pleased to announce the availability of the Fiscal Year 2021 CARLI Professional Development Reimbursement Program. Approved by the CARLI Board of Directors at their December 2019 meeting, this program provides funding (reimbursements only from paid expenses) to CARLI Governing Member Library staff and faculty to support professional development activities that further the CARLI Strategic Priorities. 

The purpose of the program is to provide financial support to further the professional development of CARLI member library staff and faculty, both full and part-time but excluding student and graduate workers, so that benefits accrue to the individual, his/her library, and the greater CARLI membership; and further the CARLI Strategic Priorities.

Funds can be used to cover registration, travel, and/or lodging based on the University of Illinois reimbursement rates. Please note that per diem/meals are not covered. 

CARLI Scholarship for Staff at Member Libraries

In celebration of 40 years of resource sharing in Illinois by CARLI and its predecessor organizations, and to help grow the profession, CARLI has established a scholarship that will be available for the first time in 2020. This scholarship will provide financial assistance to current employees of CARLI Governing Member Libraries pursuing graduate studies leading to a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Scholarships may be awarded for both on-campus and/or distance education programs. The scholarship amount for the 2020-2021 academic year (August 2020-May 2021) will be $1,000. We are now accepting applications. The deadline to apply is May 1, 2020.
 
We would like to thank our donors for their generous contributions to the scholarship. You can give to the scholarship fund online. The minimum donation is $5.00. We hope you will consider supporting future librarians and help CARLI grow the profession with a contribution.

Tentative FY21 E-resources Selection Cycle Dates

CARLI staff are currently working with our fiscal year vendors to prepare for the FY21 cycle. Tentative dates for the selection system to be open to libraries are March 30 to May 8.  

We are optimistic we will finalize agreements with Statista and Swank before the system is live. Statista is a platform for data and statistics. Swank will be offering packages of films that libraries can have access to for one year and have the ability to swap titles as instruction needs change.

A license with Sage for CQ content, Sage Research Methods, Sage Video, and Data Planet was finalized after the CY20 cycle. Although these products will be on a calendar year renewal cycle, the contract is effective July 1. E-Resources staff have been in contact with current subscribers to see if they want to switch to billing through CARLI or remain direct with Sage. If you are interested in adding any Sage databases as of July 1, please email CARLI Support for a price quote.

Beyond Free Textbooks: How OER Addresses Access, Inclusion, and Academic Excellence

The CARLI Open Educational Resources Task Force is pleased to share that the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library will host an in-person and livestream event in celebration of Open Education Week on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Professor Jasmine Roberts from The Ohio State University has been invited to present her talk titled, "Beyond Free Textbooks: How OER Addresses Access, Inclusion, and Academic Excellence."

Individuals are welcome to attend in-person at the University of Illinois Main Library in Room 220, located at 1408 W. Gregory Drive, Urbana, IL 61801 or tune in to the livestream of the event.

This keynote address will evolve current open educational resource (OER) discussions that typically center on cost-savings themes to a conversation about how using these resources improves pedagogy and addresses diversity and inclusion in higher education. More specifically, this talk will address how OER improves the conditions of marginalized student and faculty populations through more inclusive and equitable practices. The keynote will also challenge the audience to think more critically about traditional academic practices, procedures, and infrastructure by encouraging the adoption of open education philosophies at the institutional level.

Preservation Committee Open Houses

The CARLI Preservation Committee invites you to attend guided tours of two CARLI Governing Member libraries, the Newberry Library and Chicago History Museum, on March 27, 2020. Attendees will be able to learn more about the Newberry Library conservation lab and the Chicago History Museum archives. Lunch will be provided.

Messy Data? Clean it up with OpenRefine!

Join the CARLI Created Content Committee on April 30, 2020, at the I Hotel in Champaign for a workshop which introduces OpenRefine a free, open source tool used to organize, clean up, and transform your data. Presenters Tricia Lampron from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Greer Martin, from Loyola University Chicago, will provide an overview of this browser-based application, as well as use cases that show the benefits of working with your data in OpenRefine. The first half of this workshop will demonstrate the basic functions to get you started on cleaning up your data, while activities in the second half include reconciling data against two different types of sources, library authority data and Wikidata. The workshop will also teach how to import data by making an API call in OpenRefine, and how to export your data in a different formats such as XML and JSON.
 
This workshop is intended for all CARLI members, but may be of special interest to those who work with spreadsheets, data, metadata, authorities, controlled vocabularies, and open data.
 
While the workshop will not be completely hands-on, participants are highly encouraged to bring their own laptops so they can work with their own dataset or some provided metadata during the workshop. WiFi and power strips will be available.

Call for Presentation Proposals for CARLI′s 8th Annual Instruction Showcase 

The CARLI Instruction Committee is seeking presentation proposals for the 8th Annual Instruction Showcase on Friday, May 29 at Harper College in Palatine, IL.

CARLI members are welcome to submit proposals on all library instruction topics, and encouraged to draw inspiration from the committee's theme this year, "Fresh Starts and Restarts: Growing Beyond Your Comfort Zone." Lessons related to the theme might include new approaches to evaluating information, reimagined instruction for improved accessibility, and techniques for teaching new systems such as Primo VE.

Proposals should outline an instruction session activity that supports skills-based or conceptual learning and encourages active student participation. Please include a full lesson plan with your proposal. 

All lesson plans must include the following elements: topic, learning objectives, materials, activity overview, assessment of student learning, and applicable knowledge practices and/or dispositions from the Framework for Information Literacy. Presenters will be given 15 minutes to present and five minutes for questions and answers. Each breakout room is equipped with a presenter′s station, however, please note that there will not be a computer lab available this year.

If interested, please submit the proposal form by than 5 p.m. on Monday, April 6.

Submissions will be reviewed by the CARLI Instruction Committee; notifications will be sent during the week of April 13.

Getting Ready for Primo VE Forum

The CARLI Instruction and Public Services Committees have planned a daylong forum on April 2 for library staff exploring and discussing Primo VE. Please note: This is NOT a training session.

There are two attendance options: you can attend in-person at Joliet Junior College or virtually via Zoom. Several of the presentations will be recorded however, the entire day will NOT be streamed/recorded since there will be guided small group discussion among attendees. Registration is required for both options. 

Initially in-person registration is limited to two people per institution. If space remains after March 12, registration will open to all interested CARLI members.

Alma Primo VE Update

With less than 120 days until we go live on June 24, 2020, we have a lot of activity going on in the CARLI Office and in the I-Share libraries.

CARLI and our Ex Libris project team have finalized several major milestone dates:

• April 1: Library staff stop making sys admin changes in Voyager and stop adding new libraries, locations, and vendors to the Alma test environments
• April 25: Library staff stop adding bib records for e-resources to Voyager; CARLI staff stop all bulk loading of bib records into Voyager.
• May 1: Beginning of the "Tech Freeze". Everyone stops adding/updating/deleting bib records, holdings, items, acquisitions and serials data in Voyager. 
• June 11: Everyone stops placing UB requests in Voyager
• June 19: Everyone stops circulating items in Voyager and may use Alma′s offline circ
• June 24: Go live on Alma and Primo VE

The milestone dates listed above are on the CARLI website calendar and will be shared with Alma PrimoVE contacts on an ongoing basis for the duration of the project.

If your institution has not yet informed CARLI as to whether you will use Open Athens or another service for Alma Primo VE authentication when we go live in June, please let us know by emailing CARLI Support by March 2. If you are on the fence about this service, please note that you may opt in (or out) at a later date (and as late as November 2022) but later responders may not be configured in time for the June go live.

Over sixty I-Share libraries currently batch load patron data into Voyager. If your library is one of them, and you want uninterrupted continuity of that service as we move to Alma, you need to be working now on planning for what Ex Libris calls "Alma SIS (student information system) sync". We have been working with pilot sites on developing scripts for transferring data from multiple systems in use at our member institutions. To avoid interruptions in this data transfer, please work with your IT support and CARLI to get this integration tested and in place before May 1.

CARLI will be coordinating a major test of Alma′s equivalent of UB, the Automated Fulfillment Network (AFN) in March. Every library will be expected to participate in this testing. This will help you to make sure that you understand the AFN process, that your staff have the right Alma privileges on their accounts to be able to do the work, and that you are ready to print transit slips and other circulation forms. Watch for an announcement with more details on this soon.

We know this is a huge project with innumerable tentacles, so it′s easy to miss something or get overwhelmed. As we like to say at CARLI, the only dumb question is the one that is not asked.

CANCELED: Cut the CRAAP

The CARLI Instruction Committee has canceled their planned April 1 panel discussion, "Cut the CRAAP: Fresh Takes on Evaluating Information," due to a lack of panel proposals. Instead, they will host a webinar on April 7 by Dawn Stahura, creator of the ACT UP method for evaluating sources. A description of this event, and registration, will be coming soon.

ILLINET Survey

The ILLINET Interlibrary Loan (ILL) & Reciprocal Borrowing Statistical Survey, available now, is are required by administrative rule to complete the Illinois State Library's annual survey of interlibrary loan traffic. [23 Ill. Adm. Code 3030.200 (a) (2) (O)]

The FY2019 (Ju1y 1, 2018–June 30, 2019) ILLINET ILL Traffic Survey must be completed by March 31, 2020.

The ILLINET Interlibrary Loan Code [23 ILL. Adm. Code 3030 Exhibit A] governs ILL among ILLINET member libraries.  ILLINET member libraries should review the ILL Code to ensure that the library continues to meet resource sharing requirements that are necessary for continued system membership.

Annual Online Library System Certification 

The Annual Online Certification process began Jan. 2, 2020. Certification is required of all library system members in order to qualify for continuing system services and grants programs from the State Library. The window for certification will close March 31, 2020. Libraries are also required to complete the ILLINET Interlibrary Loan & Reciprocal Borrowing Statistical Survey, before completing certification. The ILLINET Interlibrary Loan & Reciprocal Borrowing Statistical Survey can be completed any time prior to the certification deadline, March 31, 2020. 

More information about certification is available at the State Library’s Annual Library Certification webpage. The page includes a link to the data and questions included in the certification form, a link to the online certification portal (accessible from Jan. 2–March 31), Frequently Asked Questions and a document outlining Library Data Entry Guidelines to use while completing the certification form.

Registration Open for Exploring OER: Access, Adoption, and Application

CARLI members are invited to attend the Exploring OER: Access, Adoption, and Application Conference, sponsored by ILCCO and NILRC. 

The conference will be held on Friday, April 17 at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, Illinois. The keynote speaker is Abbey Elder, Open Access & Scholarly Communication Librarian at Iowa State University and author of The OER Starter Kit. 

Registration is $30. Please register by Thursday, April 9.

New IDHH Collections Blog Site

The IDHH Collections blog has a new ad-free home!
 
While all the content was migrated to the new site, original subscribers could not be migrated, so you will need to subscribe again. This is the go-to site for project news, events, and updates –an essential companion to the IDHH portal site as it can be much more frequently updated. It is also frequently updated with content relating to Illinois history.

Apply for ARL Digital Scholarship Institute at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The ARL Academy is accepting applications for the fifth iteration of the ARL Digital Scholarship Institute, with a deadline of Friday, March 13, 2020.

The Digital Scholarship Institute is a five-day, cohort-based opportunity for library professionals and graduate students who are new to digital scholarship and would like to develop their skills in an intensive, yet supportive, learner-centered environment. This iteration of the ARL Digital Scholarship Institute will take place Monday–Friday, June 15–June 19, 2020, at the Hyatt Place Champaign and will be hosted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library. 

The cost of the institute is $1,500, excluding travel and accommodations.

Census 2020 

A new toolkit designed to strengthen library efforts in promoting Census 2020 outreach geared toward immigrant communities and New Americans is now available. The "Counted In" Toolkit is a project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The resources are primarily downloadable, customizable free visual aids and marketing material. They are free and available for all types of libraries.

Elevate 2020

This year′s Elevate 2020 leadership session will explore the concept of judging versus joining behaviors and the types of behaviors that lead to inclusion and exclusion. This is a timely topic as libraries are grappling with concepts of inclusion and equity, and how to create and sustain professional environments. Please join us at the Illinois State Library on April 18, 2020 from 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. to work through this topic with the Mark A. Puente, Director of Diversity and Leadership Programs with the Association of Research Libraries. This program is jointly sponsored by the Illinois Library Association, the Illinois Heartland Library System, the Reaching Across Illinois Library System and the Illinois State Library.
