CARLI 40th Anniversary Celebration 

In 2020, the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois will celebrate 40 years of resource sharing through CARLI and its predecessor organizations. To commemorate and celebrate this important anniversary we are planning a reception during the ALA Annual Conference at the Art Institute of Chicago, in the Chicago Stock Exchange Trading Room on Sunday, June 28 from 4-6 p.m.

Staff of all CARLI member libraries, and our consortia colleagues across the nation will be invited to attend this ticketed event.

CARLI Scholarship for Staff at Member Libraries

In celebration of 40 years of resource sharing in Illinois by CARLI and its predecessor organizations, and to help grow the profession, CARLI has established a scholarship that will be available for the first time in 2020. This scholarship will provide financial assistance to current employees of CARLI Governing Member Libraries pursuing graduate studies leading to a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Scholarships may be awarded for both on-campus and/or distance education programs. The scholarship amount for the 2020-2021 academic year (August 2020-May 2021) will be $1,000. We are now accepting applications. The deadline to apply is May 1, 2020.
 
We would like to thank our donors for their generous contributions to the scholarship. You can give to the scholarship fund online. The minimum donation is $5.00. We hope you will consider supporting future librarians and help CARLI grow the profession with a contribution!

ILDS Survey

E-Resources Updates

FY21 Selection Cycle: We are currently preparing for the FY21 selection cycle. The tentative dates for the cycle being open are the end of March through the middle of May. CARLI is eager to offer products from two new vendors this year; stay tuned for details!

Sage/CQ License: CARLI has finalized an agreement with Sage that includes their non-journal content including CQ Researcher and Sage Research Methods. The license starts July 1, 2020, but all Sage products will be on a calendar year cycle. We are working on contacting libraries about prorating their subscriptions to line up to the calendar year cycle. If you subscribe to any Sage products, look for an email with information.

Commercial Products Committee Webinars: The Commercial Products committee is working on hosting several webinars this spring relating to e-resources and Alma. Dates are still to be confirmed, but look for announcements on the CARLI calendar and e-resources/collections email lists soon. The webinars will include topics such as creating e-resources workflows with Alma in a small library environment, e-resources configurations in Alma (e.g., data duplication, cleanup, link recovers, etc.), etc.

Article Title: Post-Facts: Information Literacy and Authority after the 2016 Election
Author: Stefanie R. Bluemle, Augustana College, *Winner of the ACRL Instruction Publication of the Year
Abstract: "This article addresses the challenge that post-truth politics poses to teaching authority in information literacy. First, it isolates an element of the post-truth phenomenon, an element it calls post-facts, to elucidate why teaching source evaluation is not, by itself, an antidote to fake news or other evidence of Americans′ media illiteracy. Second, it addresses the implications of post-facts politics for the concept of authority as defined by the "Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education," drawing on the work of Patrick Wilson and Max Weber to illustrate which elements of authority librarians must rethink due to recent events"

We hope you will also come with your own perspectives and queries to offer. We are excited to share that author Stefanie Bluemle will be on hand to participate in our discussion and answer questions about her work.

CARLI Supports 5 Librarians for OTN′s Certificate in OER Librarianship Program

CARLI is pleased to announce that we will be supporting the attendance of five of our governing member librarians at the Open Textbook Network Certificate in OER Librarianship Program in 2020. These members will participate in online and in-person programs designed to create effective open education program leaders. The recipients of CARLI financial support this year are:

3.  Make a presentation to the CARLI membership during a webinar, meeting, or other event about the certificate program

Open Education Week Presentation

The CARLI Open Educational Resources Task Force is pleased to share that the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library will host an in-person and livestream event in celebration of Open Education Week on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. 
 
Professor Jasmine Roberts from The Ohio State University has been invited to present her talk titled, "Beyond Free Textbooks: How OER Addresses Access, Inclusion, and Academic Excellence."
 
Individuals are welcome to attend in-person at the University of Illinois Main Library in Room 220, located at 1408 W. Gregory Drive, Urbana, IL 61801 or tune in to the livestream of the event.
 
This keynote address will evolve current open educational resource (OER) discussions that typically center on cost-savings themes to a conversation about how using these resources improves pedagogy and addresses diversity and inclusion in higher education. More specifically, this talk will address how OER improves the conditions of marginalized student and faculty populations through more inclusive and equitable practices. The keynote will also challenge the audience to think more critically about traditional academic practices, procedures, and infrastructure by encouraging the adoption of open education philosophies at the institutional level.

Save the Date: March 27 Preservation Committee Open Houses

The CARLI Preservation Committee invites you to attend guided tours of two CARLI Governing Member libraries, the Newberry Library and Chicago History Museum, on March 27, 2020. Attendees will be able to learn more about the Newberry Library conservation lab and the Chicago History Museum archives. Lunch will be provided. Registration information is forthcoming. We hope you will be able to join us!

Messy Data? Clean it up with OpenRefine!

Join the CARLI Created Content Committee on April 30, 2020, at the I Hotel in Champaign for a workshop which introduces OpenRefine a free, open source tool used to organize, clean up, and transform your data. Presenters Tricia Lampron from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Greer Martin, from Loyola University Chicago, will provide an overview of this browser-based application, as well as use cases that show the benefits of working with your data in OpenRefine. The first half of this workshop will demonstrate the basic functions to get you started on cleaning up your data, while activities in the second half include reconciling data against two different types of sources, library authority data and Wikidata. The workshop will also teach how to import data by making an API call in OpenRefine, and how to export your data in different formats such as XML and JSON.
 
This workshop is intended for all CARLI members, but may be of special interest to those who work with spreadsheets, data, metadata, authorities, controlled vocabularies, and open data.
 
While the workshop will not be completely hands-on, participants are highly encouraged to bring their own laptops so they can work with their own dataset or some provided metadata during the workshop. WiFi and power strips will be available.

Webinar Presenters Needed!

The CARLI Instruction Committee is seeking presenters for a panel discussion on fresh approaches to evaluating information, to be presented via webinar on April 1, 2020.  

As our students grapple with various forms of alternative facts, what tools or frameworks can instruction librarians employ to help them effectively determine what’s fact, what’s fiction, and what’s somewhere in between? 

Interested presenters (either individuals or groups) should submit an approximately 100-word description of the approach or strategy they′d like to discuss. Submit your proposal via Survey Monkey. 

The deadline for submission is February 11, 2020.

CARLI Funds OpenAthens for 3 Years

We are excited to share that CARLI has purchased EBSCO OpenAthens for Governing Member libraries through June 30, 2023 to assist in establishing single sign-on service.  

A webinar, presented by the OpenAthens product team, was held January 29, to kick things off. This session was recorded. Please watch for a link from the event page to the recording as soon as it is available. I-Share libraries will not be required to use OpenAthens but we encourage you to watch the webinar to learn about OpenAthens and help you decide whether it would be a good fit for your institution.  

Please review EBSCO’s online questionnaire for CARLI Governing Member libraries using OpenAthens. This will need to be completed once you decide that you will use OpenAthens.

In the next few weeks, EBSCO and CARLI staff will be following up with I-Share libraries to make sure we know which institutions are planning to use OpenAthens when we go live on Alma and Primo VE on June 24.  

If you decide to use a service other than OpenAthens, we will provide you an Ex Libris Authentication Setup Form to complete. If you are using OpenAthens, EBSCO will complete this form on your behalf.

Getting Ready for Primo VE

Please save the date for a program about Getting Ready for Primo VE sponsored by both the CARLI Public Services Committee and Instruction Committee. It will be held at Joliet Junior College on April 2, 2020. CARLI will provide lunch. Registration is forthcoming.  

Alma Primo VE Update

We are now less than 150 days away from our scheduled June 24, 2020 launch of Alma and Primo VE! Over the next few weeks, the CARLI, and Ex Libris staff, will be ramping up our efforts to make sure that all I-Share libraries are aware of what they need to be doing to be ready when Alma and Primo VE go live. We will be focusing on "readiness" in our weekly Office Hours presentations (Thursday′s at 2 pm, check the CARLI website calendar for connectivity information) and other communications including a "CARLI-fied" version of Ex Libris standard readiness checklist that we will soon be sharing. If our go-live date seemed a lot further off before we turned the calendar to 2020, don′t panic! We have heard from some of you that there is so much to Alma that you don’t know where to begin. Alma is in fact a very powerful and flexible system but remember that you don′t have to make use of all of its features on Day One, or ever for that matter.  

Here′s our suggestions for what you should be doing now, late January-early February 2020:

1. Continue to review your data and note any changes you think you need to make in the production load. Focus on addressing issues that impact discoverability and access; there will always be data to correct, this is not the time for non-essential work.
2. Make sure your staff and colleagues have the Alma user roles they need to do the work they do every day. Encourage each of them all to verify this by testing with their own logins.
3. Check that your fulfillment terms of use are providing users the circulation privileges that you expect for all of your materials.
4. If you do batch loads of patron records now, be sure to work with the staff that create that data and with CARLI to set up and test the Alma "SIS" (student information system) integrations. 
5. Make sure you have a plan for user authentication. CARLI has purchased three years of OpenAthens for our member libraries and the EBSCO OpenAthens staff will soon be working on set up with libraries that chose to use this service. If you have a single sign-on service in place at your institution that you prefer to use instead of OpenAthens, please start testing and let CARLI know that you will be using that service. 
6. Familiarize yourself with Primo VE so that you can better assist your patrons. Customizing Primo VE is an ongoing process, focus on the essentials for Day One.
7. Participate in CARLI′s Open Office Hour webinars. These are a great opportunity to ask questions. Even if you have not been joining these sessions this fall, start now, there are no prerequisites to participation.
8. Organize some collaborative time among your staff and/or with other similar institutions to simply explore, try things, and learn Alma and Primo VE together. CARLI is hosting several upcoming live online sessions that will allow you to test the Alma Automated Fulfillment Network (like UB) with other libraries. See the times and dates on the CARLI website calendar. Or simply find a "buddy" to whom you can demonstrate a task you will have to perform in Alma. Showing others how something works is often one of the best ways to become more comfortable with a task.
9. Remember that your institution can grow into Alma and Primo VE. If you don’t currently use a function in Voyager, or feel you need to start using it in Alma, focus on the functions that are essential to your institution at this time.
10. As always, don′t hesitate to reach out to the CARLI staff. Our staff is also still learning but we have a dedicated Ex Libris project team backing us up and we will do everything we can to help you.

ILLINET Survey Now Available 

The ILLINET Interlibrary Loan (ILL) & Reciprocal Borrowing Statistical Survey is available now. Libraries are required by administrative rule to complete the Illinois State Library's annual survey of interlibrary loan traffic. [23 Ill. Adm. Code 3030.200 (a) (2) (O)]

The FY2019 (Ju1y 1, 2018–June 30, 2019) ILLINET ILL Traffic Survey must be completed by March 31, 2020.

The ILLINET Interlibrary Loan Code [23 ILL. Adm. Code 3030 Exhibit A] governs ILL among ILLINET member libraries.  ILLINET member libraries should review the ILL Code to ensure that the library continues to meet resource sharing requirements that are necessary for continued system membership. More detailed information about adherence to the ILL Code is available.

Annual Online Library System Certification 

The Annual Online Certification process began Jan. 2, 2020. Certification is required of all library system members in order to qualify for continuing system services and grants programs from the State Library. The window for certification will close March 31, 2020. Libraries are also required to complete the ILLINET Interlibrary Loan & Reciprocal Borrowing Statistical Survey, before completing certification. The ILLINET Interlibrary Loan & Reciprocal Borrowing Statistical Survey can be completed any time prior to the certification deadline, March 31, 2020. 

More information about certification is available at the State Library’s Annual Library Certification webpage. The page includes a link to the data and questions included in the certification form, a link to the online certification portal (accessible from Jan. 2–March 31), Frequently Asked Questions and a document outlining Library Data Entry Guidelines to use while completing the certification form.

WebJunction Learning Opportunities

Library specific, online courses and webinars are always available free through the WebJunction Course Catalog, providing relevant learning at your fingertips. Sign-up for a free account, and take advantage of the over 320 self-paced learning opportunities with courses ranging from “access and equity” to “young adults and teens.” All programs are online, so you are able to take advantage of the training without traveling.

FirstSearch Reference Database  

In support of statewide needs for access to quality information resources, the Illinois State Library subscribes to FirstSearch, and offers the basic package for database access to every library, at no cost to the library. FirstSearch offers electronic access to a rich collection of reference databases with more than 10 million full-text and full-image articles. Underlying FirstSearch is the WorldCat database. Through WorldCat, users can find relevant records quickly plus the location to request the resource. 1,466,612 total searches were conducted between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019.
