In celebration of 40 years of resource sharing in Illinois by CARLI and its predecessor organizations, and to help grow the profession, CARLI has established a scholarship that will be available for the first time in 2020. This scholarship will provide financial assistance to current employees of CARLI Governing Member Libraries pursuing graduate studies leading to a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Please be sure to check out the details including information on how to apply!
CARLI is also seeking support for the fund. You can give to the scholarship fund online. The minimum donation is $5.00.

We are now just seven months from our June 24, 2020 "go live" date for Alma and Primo VE. While I-Share library staff should still be reviewing their data and configuration in light of things they might want to change before the final production data load, our focus is now turning towards planning for integrating various products and services with Alma and Primo VE. This work includes planning for patron data management, user authentication, printing, and connections to products like self-service checkout equipment.
Every I-Share library that bulk loads patron data into Voyagers should be working with their institution′s IT staff to make sure they are aware of the format changes that need to be made to the patron data files. On November 21, CARLI hosted an Open Office Hour presentation on Alma′s options for user (patron) data importing and synchronization with institutional Student Information Systems (SIS). If you were not able to participate in the 11/21 webinar, soon you will be able to view its recording, along with the rest of these sessions.
We will be taking Thanksgiving week off, and our next Open Office Hours will be on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 2pm focusing on printing and letters (Alma’s term for notices).
We have arranged for more of Ex Libris′ two-day in-person trainings in the spring. Registration is not yet open, watch your email for an announcement of registration opening. We are still waiting on Ex Libris to finish and release Primo VE to all 91 test environments, please watch for our announcements on that in the near future.
As we go into Thanksgiving, we want to thank you all again for all the work you have been doing to keep this project moving forward and on schedule. We greatly appreciate your patience and good humor as we all continue to learn and explore our Alma options.

"CARLI Counts: Analytics and Advocacy for Service Development," is a three-year project funded by an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program grant, in the amount of $243,885.
CARLI Counts is a continuing education library leadership immersion program that prepares librarians to make effective use of research findings on the impact of academic libraries on student success for the twin purposes of service development and library advocacy. Program participants will learn how to use local library data analytics in alignment with institutional data, goals, and strategic priorities to improve their services and demonstrate their value. Deliverables will include a portfolio of local case studies, an evaluation of the collective statewide impact of those cases, and a replicable state/regional training model for equipping librarians to be campus leaders in assessing library impact on student learning and success, all of which will be made openly available on the CARLI website. CARLI is working in partnership with the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign and Lewis & Clark Community College.
Cohort members attend two, three-day in-person sessions, for a total of six in-person days; webinars held in April, May, June, September, and October; and work online collaboratively throughout the program, culminating in team presentations at the CARLI Annual Meeting in November.
Cohort 2 will meet February 18–20, and July 14–16, 2020, at the I Hotel in Champaign. Lodging and meals are paid for by the grant. Travel to Champaign will be the responsibility of the participant. Participants will also be expected to attend the CARLI Annual Meeting, on November 13, 2020, in Champaign. Cohort 2 will complete their work in early 2021.
View the detailed timeline.
To be considered for participation, complete the Library Application Form, and submit it to Anne Craig.
Libraries will be invited to participate based on evaluation of these criteria:
Cohort 2 applications are due by December 4, 2019.
Library Directors/Deans will be notified of decisions by December 9, 2019.
The CARLI Created Content Committee is pleased to offer a series of three webinars on copyright in December. Join the committee and their speakers on the following Tuesdays from 10 to 11 a.m.
December 3: Sara Benson, Copyright Librarian & Assistant Professor Scholarly Communication & Publishing at the University of Illinois Library, will present our first webinar entitled "Librarian Superpowers: Librarians Harnessing Copyright for the Public Good.” Sara will share basic copyright information; what work is in the public domain; Section 108 copyright exceptions; and fair use.
December 10: Hannah Stitzlein, Metadata & Repository Services Librarian at the University of Cincinnati Library, will present "Smart Decisions: Using Standardized Rights Statements for Digital Collections." The talk will cover what standardized rights statements are, when and how to apply a standardized rights statement versus a license, and what tools can help in determining which is the best standardized rights statement for objects in digital collections.
December 17: Bring your copyright and rights statements questions for an open Q&A Session with both Hannah and Sara!
Follow the links to register for each webinar.
Join Natalie Furlett, Executive Director, Campus Compact Illinois; and Katherine Paterson, Civic Engagement Librarian, Loyola University Chicago Libraries; who will discuss: "CARLI Member Libraries and the 2020 Census: Promoting the Count" on Wednesday, December 11, from 10-11 a.m.
CARLI member libraries have a crucial role to play in educating our student constituents and residents of the communities in which we live on the importance of Census 2020. Illinois is forecast to lose population in the upcoming census, affecting everything from the number of Illinois representatives in Congress, to local government representation, to the Library Services and Technology Act Grant and Illinois' allotment that is administered by the Office of the Illinois Secretary of State. College students are considered a "Hard to Count" population; their inclusion is essential for a fair and accurate count. Join this webinar to find out how CARLI member libraries can help promote Census 2020 and the participation of our students and communities.
We hope you’ll join us for this important event!
For 2019-2020, the CARLI Preservation Committee is sharing a series of interviews with preservation managers, conservators, and other library specialists who graciously described their experiences on preservation and conservation topics of interest to CARLI libraries.
This month, William Schlaack, Digital Reformatting Coordinator at the University of Illinois asked Marco Vinicio Valladares Perez, Exhibits Conservator at the University of Illinois, to share some of his experiences working with exhibits. Read this full article.

In late September, the Illinois Digital Heritage Hub (IDHH) launched a new website and search portal. The IDHH is a statewide initiative for harvesting digital collections metadata from institutions around Illinois and for providing this metadata to the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA). The project is a collaboration among the Chicago Public Library, the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries of Illinois, the Illinois State Library, and the UIUC Library. As of October 2019, 150 institutions contribute more than 320,000 records to the IDHH, numbers that are almost certain to grow.
The IDHH website helps realize the project′s goals of increasing awareness of contributing institutions′ collections and providing greater access to these collections through a one-stop portal to hundreds of thousands of digital objects from across Illinois. Site visitors can dive into collections with keyword searches or may browse by options in one of several categories, including Illinois History, Notable Illinoisans, Illinois Communities, Collections by Format, and Partner Institutions. The site also provides documentation and guides for institutions who wish to begin contributing or for current partners who want to provide new collections or refine their metadata. Additionally, users can save their favorite items to lists that persist on their web browser and may be downloaded for greater convenience.
Additional features for the IDHH site will be added in the coming months, including improvements to the browsing options, curated topics, and exhibitions. Future development will depend in part on user feedback and the IDHH invites site visitors to provide their thoughts. We look forward to hearing what people think and are excited to continue building the site and to help broaden the IDHH project.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact the IDHH metadata manager and webmaster, Joshua Lynch.
The ILLINET Interlibrary Loan (ILL) & Reciprocal Borrowing Statistical Survey is available now. Libraries are required by administrative rule to complete the Illinois State Library's annual survey of interlibrary loan traffic. [23 Ill. Adm. Code 3030.200 (a) (2) (O)]
The FY2019 (Ju1y 1, 2018–June 30, 2019) ILLINET ILL Traffic Survey must be completed by March 31, 2020.
The ILLINET Interlibrary Loan Code [23 ILL. Adm. Code 3030 Exhibit A] governs ILL among ILLINET member libraries. ILLINET member libraries should review the ILL Code to ensure that the library continues to meet resource sharing requirements that are necessary for continued system membership. More detailed information about adherence to the ILL Code is available.
