Register Now for the CARLI Annual Meeting and Directors′ Meeting

Registration is open for the 2018 CARLI Annual Meeting to be held Friday, November 2 at the I Hotel and Conference Center in Champaign. Staff at any CARLI member library are invited to attend.

Space is limited. Register by Thursday, October 25.

A meeting of the CARLI Library Directors will precede the Annual Meeting. Directors should register for this meeting if they are planning to attend.

A separate registration is required for each meeting.

A special room rate of $139 has been arranged at the I-Hotel and Conference Center for those who are planning to travel to Champaign on Thursday, November 1. This room block is only available until October 1. Please book your rooms as soon as possible if you are planning to stay overnight in Champaign. To make reservations, contact the I-Hotel directly at 217-819-5000. Use the Reservation Code CARLI2018 when making your reservation.

E-Resources News

Tentative CY19 Selection System Dates

CARLI is working to prepare the CY19 subscription cycle for library commitments. Our tentative dates for the system to be open are October 9 through November 9. Watch for a list of new products being offered for CY19 coming soon. 

Three license agreements (JSTOR, Springer Nature and Wiley) are coming to an end December 31 and new agreement negotiations are ongoing. Updates on the negotiations will be provided to participants as needed. 

CY17 Usage Data Available

CARLI staff have been collecting CY17 usage data for the calendar year vendors. If you are interested in receiving CY17 usage data please send an email to CARLI Support to request a data set.

JSTOR Webinar

JSTOR is moving from archival to thematic collections and is offering a webinar discussing the content in these new collections.

CARLI and JSTOR have partnered to offer special savings on these JSTOR thematic collections. The collections focus on emerging areas of research, and frequently include multiple types of content, including journals and research reports. Covering perspectives from around the world, JSTOR thematic collections are built in collaboration with librarians, scholars, and policy researchers, and with guidance from an advisory group of professionals in the community. 

Please join us October 3 at 2:00 pm for 30-minute webinar overview of each collection: JSTOR Sustainability; JSTOR Security Studies; and the soon-to-launch JSTOR Lives of Literature. Members will learn why the collections were developed, the curriculum needs they serve, content they include, and available CARLI savings. We’ll also have time for questions and discussion. The webinar will be recorded, so if you can't make it to the live session, you can sign up and receive a link to the recording after the webinar.

Open Conference Call

Interested in promoting open educational resources on your campus? Wondering what other librarians in Illinois are doing, and what resources are available to support you? Open Textbook Tri-Fold Brochure

The CARLI Open Educational Resources Task Force has modified an openly licensed brochure that helps to explain open textbooks. The brochure provides a quick overview of open textbooks. Topics covered include: What Is an Open Textbook?, What Do Open Textbooks Look Like?, CARLI′s Open Illinois Initiative, How Do I Adopt an Open Textbook?, Where to Find Open Textbooks, and Creative Commons Licenses.
 
Two versions are available from the OER Getting Started Toolkit: 

• Adobe PDF version with CARLI logo
• MS Word version that you may customize with local information

After Giving a Local Open Textbook Faculty Workshop: Next Steps

If you plan to give local faculty workshops on open textbooks and you would like your faculty members to have the opportunity to write a book review of a text within the Open Textbook Library, you will need to send information to CARLI to report to the Open Textbook Network after your workshop. Please send an email to CARLI Support with the following information:

• Your name, email, and institution
• The date when the reviews should be completed (usually 6 weeks after the workshop)
• The first and last names of the faculty who attended your workshop and their email addresses
• If you plan to give faculty a stipend or other incentive, such as $200 upon completion of the review

Even if you do not plan to give a stipend or incentive to faculty, this information and follow-up surveys to faculty will help track statistics for adoption of open textbooks.

The Open Textbook Network has a Data Collection Plan that includes steps you should take to have reliable statistics in the future. This plan includes confirming the adoption of an open textbook, looking up the enrollment for the classes impacted by an adoption, and then calculating the savings based on enrollments and cost savings per student.

Voyager Skills Webinars

CARLI staff are pleased to announce a new, twice-a-month webinar series for the fall. The Voyager Skills Webinars will focus on different skills and techniques for working with Voyager successfully. These will include the types of information that are usually just beyond what we can offer during training workshops, information on the use of different software tools, and details on tasks that occur infrequently but still require some reference, thought, and planning. Sessions will be offered on the second and fourth/last Friday of each month at 11:00 am, and sessions will be recorded and posted to the CARLI website.

Preservation Tip: Beyond the Book: Preserving your Non-Book Collections—Introduction

Most libraries contain collections that consist primarily of bound volumes and archival papers. The steps for preserving these items are fairly well documented, and we all try to the best of our abilities to care for our collections. Those of us who are new to the field can readily find information about preserving these materials. And those of us who are veterans try to keep up with new techniques and findings. It′s a fairly well-worn path. But what do you do when you encounter something off of this beaten path? What do you do about the unusual things in your collections? We all have them. They might be statues or medals, costumes or hats, ceramics, board games, or even food items. They might also be large collections of glass plate negatives or scrapbooks. What environmental conditions to these items require? Do they need special handling or housing? In short, how do you care for the non-book items in your collection?

Throughout the upcoming academic year the CARLI Preservation Committee will be writing a series of preservation tips that will culminate in a website of beyond the book resources. Each newsletter tip will focus on an unusual item or group of similar items that you might encounter in your collection. Each author will recount their own story about the unusual item they have encountered in their collection, the challenges these items presented, and how they ultimately decided to best preserve that item or items. Where it is relevant, they will also provide places to find more information or best practices. The more we know about how to preserve non-book items, the better our decision making can be.

Geoscience Librarianship 101

This full-day introduction to earth science information resources and their organization will be presented by the Geoscience Information Society (GSIS) on Saturday, November 3 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Registration is free and open to all information professionals as well as students in library and information studies.

GL101 is aimed at librarians new to the geosciences and those already in the field who want a refresher.  It will provide an overview of geoscience information and current topics in reference, research, and publications; collection development; and geospatial information. Additional topics may include solo librarianship, STEM research/library services in the oil and gas industry, and trends in scholarly communication for Earth sciences. Participants are encouraged to bring their own questions and issues for discussion. 

A team of six experienced geoscience librarians will lead the seminar: Amanda Bielskas (Columbia University), Linda Zellmer (Western Illinois University), Stephanie Earls (Washington Geological Survey), Samantha Teplitzky (University of California, Berkeley), Mary Ellen Vedas (Hess Technical Library), and Emily Wild (Princeton University). 

Geoscience Librarianship 101 is jointly sponsored with Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and will be held in the University Library.

RAILS/IACRL Networking Event @ Northwestern University 

Connect with academic library colleagues in your area! 

On Tuesday, November 6, 2018, 9:30 am–noon, RAILS and IACRL will host a networking event at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. 

This event is open to all academic librarians and will feature more information on RAILS and IACRL programs and services, as well as a structured discussion and a tour of the Northwestern University Library. Coffee and refreshments will be served.

IDHH/DPLA Metadata Office Hours 

Please join Joshua Lynch, Visiting Metadata Specialist for the Illinois Digital Heritage Hub, for Metadata Office Hours, every other Friday from 11:00 am–12:00 pm beginning on October 12. The goal of these sessions is to answer questions you may have about the Illinois Digital Heritage Hub (IDHH), the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA), and metadata, especially how your collections’ metadata can be prepared and enhanced for harvest by the IDHH and DPLA. All are welcome, including newcomers, folks from currently contributing institutions, and those who have attended IDHH workshops. The sessions are one hour and begin with a short introduction and answers to some of the most frequently asked questions. The bulk of the time will focus on answering your questions. Moreover, please feel free to pop in at any point during the time slot. Below are the office hour dates for the next two months:
