The FY 17 Selection Cycle is expected to open in the first week May using the newly redesigned Selection System. Vendors are currently loading pricing into the system. After all pricing has been verified, the system will be open to libraries for their FY17 subscription commitments.
In the new selection system, users will be able to access a wealth of information from a single screen, including license agreements, usage terms, their library’s subscription history, product URLs, and descriptions. Feedback from our beta test libraries has been very positive, and we are hopeful that all of our users will agree that it is quick and easy to use.
User credentials and system instructions will be sent to the E-Resource contacts at each of our governing member libraries. Additional information and status updates will be provided to the E-resource Contacts and CCG email lists. If you would like to verify your participation in one or both of those email lists, please send a note to CARLI support.
Each year CARLI has a number of opportunities to serve on various committees. Service on CARLI committees affords individuals a unique opportunity to use their experience and expertise to help shape the future of the consortium and its services. CARLI is now seeking volunteers to serve on 9 advisory committees. Volunteers chosen will serve a three-year term, July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2019. Faculty and staff members from all CARLI member libraries, with all levels of experience, are encouraged to apply.
To volunteer, please complete the committee volunteer form by April 29, 2016. To be considered for appointment, you must fill out the online form, even if you have previously submitted a form, or if you are a current committee member whose term is expiring and you wish to be considered again. CARLI seeks to include as many individuals and institutions as possible in committee service, so committee rosters are limited to one person from any institution, and reappointments are not routinely made.
Forms submitted by April 29, 2016 will be considered for initial FY 2017 appointments. The list of all volunteers will be retained until March 1, 2017 and will be used to fill other committee vacancies as they occur.
Individuals accepting appointments to CARLI committees are expected to participate fully and actively in the work of the committee, including regular attendance at meetings and committee-sponsored events held throughout the calendar year. CARLI makes every effort to conduct the majority of committee business using web conferencing technologies or via conference calls. However, committee service may require time and/or travel expenses for one or more in-person meetings each year.
The following CARLI Committees are seeking members:
To view the committee charge, and the current committee rosters, visit the Board and Committee pages on the CARLI web site.
The Executive Director, in consultation with the Executive Committee of the CARLI Board of Directors will make appointments no later than June 17, 2016. All new committee members will officially begin work on July 1, 2016.
Please send questions about CARLI committees or the process for selecting committee members to CARLI support.
The CARLI Instruction Committee will soon be seeking volunteers to demonstrate instructional activities for the 4th Annual Instruction Showcase in July (specific date forthcoming) at Heartland Community College, Normal, IL.
Proposals should outline an instruction session activity that supports skills-based or conceptual learning and encourages active student participation. Please include a full lesson plan with your proposal. All lesson plans must include the following elements: topic, learning objectives, materials, lesson outline, assessment of student learning, and applicable knowledge practices and/or dispositions from the Framework for Information Literacy.
Presenters will be given 15 minutes to present and five minutes for questions and answers. Past Showcase handouts are available on the CARLI Instruction web page.
We would really like to hear from you! Watch for a call for proposals soon. Submissions will be reviewed by the CARLI Instruction Committee and presenters will notified.
The CARLI Collection Management Committee is pleased to present a webinar on Monograph Collection Collaboration. This webinar will be held on Monday, May 9, 1:30–2:30 p.m. In this webinar, panelists will share information on existing collaborative projects at member libraries, possible collaborative models for CARLI members, and next steps for CARLI members to work together. During FY2017, the Collection Management Committee will coordinate opportunities to bring together subject groups to explore member funded pilot projects.

On April 26, 2016, the ALCTS Preservation Week Webinar "From Cassette to Cloud: Reformatting Audiotape" was presented by Krista White, Digital Humanities Librarian at the John Cotton Dana Library at Rutgers University. Following is a description of this beneficial webinar as well as free access to the webinar recording and presentation slides.
Oral histories can provide a wealth of information about individual and community life. These recordings are highly prized not only by historians and archivists but also by the families and communities of the persons telling their stories. The risk of losing these voices is growing, as the cassettes or reels that they're recorded on may no longer be playable, or may be deteriorating. However, the rewards for making efforts now to save these items for new generations are great. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to figure out what to do to ensure that you, your family, and your community have the opportunity to continue to hear these stories. What does it take to digitize audio recordings and what are the challenges to making them available?
Learn more about the methods to evaluate audio formats, and the challenges associated with audiotape and be introduced to the equipment and software available to move obsolete audio into digital formats, the settings to use in digitizing audio in order to best meet needs and resources, file formats for digital audio, storage devices and options for different budgets, and services and resources for audio digitization by viewing the webinar recording below.
