At the September quarterly meeting of the CARLI Board of Directors, Susan Singleton announced her decision to retire as Executive Director of CARLI in July 2016.
The July 2016 timeline should allow for ample time to conduct a search for a replacement. Over the next several months Susan will work with the Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs and the Board of Directors on a plan for the next steps. More details about the search process for a new Executive Director will be available at a later date.
"The decision to retire was difficult, but it is the right one for me at this time," said Singleton." It has been an honor to work with the staff and directors of the academic libraries in the state and with the CARLI staff throughout this first decade of CARLI’s existence. It is several months before I leave and I will be busy trying to wrap up as many projects as possible. I look forward to continuing our important work over the next year, as we plan for CARLI’s second decade. I have no doubt that the incredible CARLI staff and Board of Directors, working with the truly outstanding CARLI community, will ensure a smooth transition for CARLI's future."

Have you ever had the experience of having a retired professor walk in to your library with an 8 mm film reel and not having the equipment to play it? Or has a donation come in for your archives with VHS tapes that are all covered in mold? How often do you worry about the state of your media collection? Have you ever tried to plan for its preservation?
Earlier this year, the CARLI Preservation Committee (CARLI Pres Com), as part of its Annual Project, conducted the 2015 CARLI Preservation Survey1. The purpose of the survey was to understand the level of institutional commitment to preservation and conservation of its collections in all media/formats, and to see what the preservation capabilities in the consortium are. As a result of the 2015 CARLI Preservation Survey the committee decided to focus on the preservation of audio-visual (AV) materials for the upcoming year. Throughout this academic year we will follow two volunteer Illinois institutions, as they tackle the issues involved in the stewardship this type of cultural heritage.
Why Focus on The Preservation of AV Materials?
The survey provided the committee with a good understanding of the current state of library preservation and conservation among the CARLI governing members. The institutions acknowledge a greater need for preservation and conservation of their collections than they can meet. The survey results suggest that CARLI institutions need the most help in five areas:
The CARLI Preservation Committee looked at the past programming it served to the consortium. The programming had been successfully providing training and resources in most of these areas. However, the preservation of AV materials remained an underserved area for the consortium members.
Most of the expertise in the CARLI institutions is concentrated in the areas of book, paper and now increasingly digital preservation print materials. There is the growing sense that AV materials are at high risk and that the window for intervention is decreasing.

Why does a library do a video inventory? Should you do a sampling or a complete inventory? Reinvent the process or use tried and true methods? What, where, and how are the policies and procedures for doing an inventory? The answers to these questions reveal that an inventory allows the collection to be analyzed and the quality of this part of your library to be validated.
The why to do a library video inventory is similar to a book inventory: find missing items, declare items lost and make decisions on replacements, find mislabeled items and get them relabeled and shelved correctly, correct any discrepancies in the databases so the record and its corresponding item can be located. For video, you will need to review the preservation and conservation issues of each type of video material and its corresponding hardware and do all the typical book inventory chores mentioned above.
More information regarding the Inventory of Video can be found on the CARLI blog.
