Acid Reflux; Kilby, Shay; 2009
From the The Image of Research (2009) (University of Illinois at Chicago) in CARLI Digital Collections.

The Image of Research collection draws on entries to the second annual interdisciplinary competition, sponsored by the UIC Graduate College and the University Library. The competition was open to any student enrolled in a graduate or professional degree program at UIC for the Spring 2009 term. Students were invited to submit an image with aesthetic appeal that they created as part of their research. A multi-disciplinary jury reviewed the submissions and selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners as well as three honorable mentions.

Regarding her entry, pictured above, Shay Kilby states: “My research is focused on incorporating new technology into medical illustration in a way that can best serve the field of health care.

Acid reflux is the specific mechanism that is being illustrated. The mechanism is shown here at the microscopic, cellular, and anatomical level. The image was created using a variety of two dimensional and three dimensional imaging software including Adobe Creative Suite and 3D Studio Max.”
