Decisions

  • Meeting minutes from November 6th approved.
  • Next meeting date will now be held on January 8, 2025 from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m.
  • Open Pedagogy workshop will be opened to the Professional Development Alliance which is a broader audience than just Illinois institutions.

  • Shelly will send an email to a colleague at SIU Edwardsville to discuss his availability for a community chat on accessibility.
  • OpenEd Week Sessions
    • Dee Anna will reach out to a local student as to their participation in a panel of students about their experience using OER.
    • Lauren, Zach, and Dee Anna will work on a session on Measuring OER Success Beyond Student Savings.

  • OER Committee welcomed a new member, Brandon Board from Waubonsee Community College.
  • Member Announcements:
    • Dee Anna Phares (Northern Illinois University): RUSA shared a report on OER in Public Libraries. (link: https://www.libraryfutures.net/post/new-research-report-oer-in-public-libraries)
  • CARLI Announcements:
    • OEN Community Conversations Events:
      • November’s event was led by Lauren Kosrow, “Planting Seeds and Building Relationships with Faculty Partners.”
      • Upcoming event in on December 12 at noon will be a panel discussion on “Maintaining Momentum with Faculty”
    • CARLI’s Ebook Program has begun its annual renewal. Ebooks through this program allow an unlimited number of users for all CARLI member institutions and may be used for course materials.

Discussion

  • Sarah Zehr Gantz, Senior Assistant Vice President for Academic Initiatives and Policies, Office of the Executive Vice President/Vice President for Academic Affairs, University of Illinois System, met with OER Committee members to talk about their institution’s uptake on OER, how they’re using OER on campus, what support their administration is providing for development of OER and ancillaries, and any alternatives to OER their institution is using – like inclusive/equitable access.
  • OER Continuing Education
    • OER Faculty Workshop will be held in February:
      • February 7, 2025, 11:00 – 12:30, Amber Burtis and Julie Murphy
      • February 20, 2025 11:30 – 1:00, Lauren Kosrow and Evangeline Reid
    • OER Course: Understanding & Promoting Open Educational Resources:
      • First session of the December course had few attended,
      • CARLI staff will confirm registrants availability and may cancel if there is not a minimum number of participants.
      • Recommendation: Consider if this workshop topic has hit a saturation point. More discussions in future.
      • Next iteration will be held in Feb. 2025 with the instructors Dorinne Banks and Shelly McDavid.
    • Open Pedagogy Workshops will be held:
      • January 10, 11:00-noon, Dee Anna Phares and Shelly McDavid (for library staff)
      • February 27, 11:30-1:00, Chris Sweet and Kelly Hallisy (for faculty)
      • Committee decided to allow registration from the Professional Development Alliance.
      • Registration should be capped at 35.
    • OER Community Chats  
      • The November chat on- “Inclusive Access,” led by Zach Claybaugh, was very well attended and included a lively conversation. Participants expressed an appetite for more conversations.
      • Recommendation: Potential topic for OER Summit 2025.
      • February 2025 or when speakers are available on the topic of OER Format Flexibility and Accessibility
        • CARLI staff have reached out to UI staff to ask about her availability.
        • Shelly will reach out to a colleague at her institution about a future community chat or presentation at OER Summit on the topic of accessibility.
      • Kelly confirmed that she is available for the April 2025 Community Chat about AI and OER.
  • OpenEd Week Presentation Planning – Topics include:
    • Current Sessions:
      • Introducing newly created textbooks
      • March 4: PDA Program: Turning Data into Action: Responding to Illinois Students' Need for Equity of Course Materials
    • Additional Ideas
      • Measuring OER Success Beyond Student Savings.
        • Lauren, Zach, and DeeAnna will work on this session.
      • Student Panel Discussing Experiences Using OER - Potential options:  Student PIRGs or Student Government Officers on individual Illinois college campuses.
        • Dee Anna will reach out to a local student about this idea.
  • CARLI Funding Support for Member Continuing Education:
    • Sponsoring 1 person for OEN’s Certificate in Open Education Librarianship.
    • Sponsoring 2 institutions for the OEN Certificate in Open Pedagogy. Institutions attending have a librarian and faculty partner.
    • To date have sponsored two persons for the Creative Commons Certificate Program.
  • Illinois Secretary of State / State Library OER Grant Program:
    • Michele and CARLI staff met with each of the grant recipients to discuss progress.
    • Grant Workshops concluded and the recordings are posted on the CARLI webpage.
  • DOE Open Textbook Pilot Grant / Illinois SCOERs: Support for the Creation of Open Educational Resources
    • There was a "OER Petting Zoo” at the CARLI Annual Meeting that included 3D models and printed versions of the open textbooks that were written as part of this grant.
  • The Committee will have an update about the April 7, 2025 Illinois OER Summit at its next meeting.
  • The Committee will continue its discussion about a savings tracker/dashboard at its next meeting.
  • The Committee discussed the day and time of its next meeting and decided to meet on January 8 from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m.
