    • CARLI has new staff, two graduate assistants, Amy Enberg-Aravena and Sara Mercurio. The graduate assistants will be working with CARLI staff on the migration of the new I-Share libraries beginning this fall.
    • CARLI is keeping track of the broadband and digital equity efforts underway at the federal and state level. Troy Brown (IHLS) and Anne Slaughter (RAILS) presented an overview on this topic to the Governance Board.
    • The Board approved Recommendations from the Technical Services Committee on Reparative Cataloging Work for records in our shared catalog.
    • Nicole Swanson will be serving on the OEN Event Planning Committee. This may lead to opportunities for OER committee members.
    • Nicole Swanson, Elizabeth Clarage, and Michele Leigh are giving presentations at ILA (OER for Academic, Public, and K-12) and Open Education Conference (Developing a Student Survey).

Discussion

  • State Library Grant
    • How will the committee be involved? Write a statement/letter communicating willingness and vision for collaboration; promote success of awardees?
    • How will this grant and related efforts tie into an overall vision for OER in Illinois? Influence of CARLI and committee members through various advisory boards and events.
  • Continuing Education
    • Understanding and Promoting OER
      • The October course is underway. In the first session participants had questions about finding funding, Creative Commons, which may also be good topics for community chats.
      • Lauren Kosrow and Dee Anna Phares have volunteered for the December offering. Nicole Swanson and Elizabeth Clarage will reach out to potential volunteers for spring.
    • OER Faculty Workshop
      • CARLI staff will confirm volunteers before the holidays.
    • Open Pedagogy Workshops
      • Christina Norton and Tineka Scalzo will lead the workshop in October.
      • Dan Matthews and Shelly McDavid will lead in November for Librarians and Library Staff.
    • OER Community Chats
      • Volunteers are still needed for November onwards. Shelly McDavid leading conversation on rubrics/peer-review; Dan Matthews will take minutes. 18 people registered as of 10/12.
      • Dan Matthews will lead December conversation on local programming.
      • Open Education Week: will be discussed during prioritization agenda item.
  • OEN Certificate in Open Education Librarianship
    • Informative meeting for potential applicants went well.
    • OEN is also offering new certificate in Open Pedagogy; Elizabeth Clarage has shared information about this program via the consortial OER email list.
  • Creative Commons Certificate
    • Awaiting confirmation that Midwestern Higher Education Compact has renewed contract with Creative Commons.
  • Student Survey
    • 2,774 student participants thus far. Survey close December 31st.
    • Differing approaches used this fall at UIUC: outreach to student groups such as Illinois Promise program, cultural groups, as well as residence hall librarians.
    • Nicole Swanson can provide the number of responses from specific institutions if desired.
    • What to do with results in spring: event to explore survey results with students to include their reflections?
    • Potential support from committee to Nicole Swanson in handling data: further conversation helpful once data collection has concluded.
    • Potential publication/presentation opportunities for survey data: LOEX?
  • Open Illinois Hub
    • Process for including resources in hub requires manual application of endorsement; CARLI staff are working through new titles on the site.
  • Illinois SCOERs Grant
    • Majority of cover images from first round have been received. Cover images from subsequent rounds can be submitted.
    • IRB approval received, so data collection about implementation of the Illinois SCOERs projects can begin this semester.
    • Creative Commons, Copyright, and Fair Use covered as part of Illinois SCOERs offerings. Those workshops will be offered at the end of November and beginning of December. An additional LibreTexts workshop is also planned.
  • Brainstorming and Prioritizing Activities
    • Many valuable additions made to the brainstorming document.
    • Prioritization: new topics integrated into existing structure of community chats, Open Ed Week, if possible, before creating new events
    • Topics
      • Sustainability: finding continuing funding, preventing burnout, documenting faculty already using OER, promoting successful cases
      • Burnout as its own topic? Both for administrators/advocates of OER programs, and faculty members making the switch to OER.
      • Outreach materials: potential work for working group or subcommittee to update and expand these?
      • Student panel for Open Ed Week incorporating survey.
      • Platforms/Processes for OER publishing: joint presentation with other voices from Illinois OER community? Instruction Committee Showcase? Templates from OEN? ILA 2024? Rich enough topic for standalone event(s)
      • Understanding OER: definitely for spring, but Open Ed Week or a separate offering? Potential to bring in outside speaker means extra lead time needed.
      • OER Faculty Champions: potential panel for Open Ed Week with SCOERs grantees
  • Illinois Department of Corrections
    • Librarians from IDOC are getting many requests for textbooks, are interested in learning how OER might fit into their flow.
    • Dan Matthews investigating potential role of CARLI/committee, collaboration/support from RAILS and IL Heartland Library System (they have existing offerings for IDOC librarians)
    • Several committee members expressed interest in involvement with potential offerings; Dan Matthews will follow up.
  • CARLI Annual Meeting Table Talk
    • Topic needed by the end of the month, will be shared prior to meeting. Informal discussion on topic including attendees.
    • Vision for OER in the state as topic? OER: Now What?
