Announcements

- Tineka Scalzo (City Colleges of Chicago): Has joined the District level Textbook Affordability Task Force.
- Kim Hale (Columbia College of Chicago): She attended OpenEd22 and recommends the following presentations that are now available on YouTube:
- Dorinne Banks (Adler University): She also attended OpenEd22. She noted that there were no sessions for graduate level or online courses. She’s interested in exploring the intersection of the two and asked for other to contact her if they too are interested. [Dee Anna noted in chat that she was interested.]
- CARLI Announcements:
- Friday, November 4th is CARLI Annual Meeting.
Discussion
- Continuing Education
- Understanding and Promoting OER: If the agenda notes “TBD,” Elizabeth will be contacting the presenters to setup the days and time of the programs.
- OER Faculty Workshop: Polls have been sent to identify best dates.
- OER Office Hours:
- October 11th: Designing Faculty incentive programs for OER; about 12 people in attendance; worth repeating this topic in the future. Kim suggested Nicole Allen from Sparc would be a good person to invite to do a presentation. CARLI is already in talks with her about a presentation; Nicole (Swanson) mentioned having her do a student presentation too.
- Future Office Hours:
- Two remaining dates this semester.
- Catherine will take notes for November 15th and Dan will take notes for December 7. Registration is going well.
- Tineka volunteered for February. Topic TBD;
- Lauren volunteered for March. Topic: Zero Textbook Degree Program
- Committee will discuss additional Office Hours at a future meeting.
- There will be a joint newsletter for November and December. Details will need to be submitted to CARLI staff by December 9th for the next newsletter.
- January Office Hours will be skipped.
- Illinois SCOERs Grant: There was group Meet & Greet of all first round subgrant recipients. It went well; teams were able to share their experiences to date.
- Open Education Week (March 6-10, 2023):
- CARLI is in talks with Nicole Allen from SPARC to do a program on Inclusive Access. Having the program during Open Education Week was an option; however, she may be busy.
- Michele will be working with the round one Illinois SCOERs subgrant recipient teams to schedule presentations for Open Education Week.
- OER Success Stories: Last year there is a form for people to share their OER Success Stories that were then compiled to share with members. Chris Sweet may have information about the form.
- Dee Anna is interested in an OER Faculty Show and Tell; Kim, Lauren and Tineka will reach out to faculty to ask who can participate. The audience would be faculty. It would be good to have a range of types of adoption and of college types (community college; 4 yr.); also include diversity in presenters.
- Possibly have the talk “sponsored” by the Illinois Hub; share a link to the OER in the Hub
- Should a list be created for OER use – specifically for which classes for which it is being used? (Discussion tabled until the next meeting.)
- Kim suggested having a student panel. She mentioned that one of the students at the OpenEd22 panel presentation, “Rising to Action: Students at the Heart of Open Education,” was from the University of Illinois Chicago. CARLI staff is working on a student panel program including asking Nicole Allen if she would be interested; however, they are not certain it would be during Open Education Week.
- Creative Commons Boot Camp:
- Survey closed yesterday, October 31st.
- 33 people responded; 3 people said they would not interested in participating. Numbers did not support having a stand alone program.
- Instead CARLI is discussing sponsoring a portion of the registration fees per attendee. This would assist the people who stated they were interested. CARLI staff will be asking the CARLI Program Planning Committee for their support.
- CARLI would ask participants to share two of the resources that they created during the course in return for the sponsorship.
- Reminder to work on reviewing the website for changes.
- CARLI Student Course Materials Survey:
- Goals were solidified for survey; Subcommittee is reviewing questions to include on the surveyWant to launch the survey in February.
- Will try to finalize questionnaire this month to send to Institutional Review Board.
- Basics program with SPARC:
- CARLI would need to organize a student panel.
- Have questions prepared ahead of time (and share with the students).
- Statewide Outreach:
- Current document is being review by UI Administration.
- OER Commons Hub: Open Illinois:
- Dan, Chris, Tineka, and Elizabeth gave a panel presentation at ILA.
- Michele, Nicole, and Elizabeth included the Open Illinois Hub in their OpenEd presentation.
- CARLI received an CARLI institutional request to join the Hub.
- OEN Certificate Program Information Discussion
- The information session went well; hopefully CARLI will get applicants for Sponsorship.
- Illinois SCOERs
- Today is the deadline for round two of subgrant applications.
- CARLI held a meeting last week with subgrant applications from round one. Teams seemed reassurred to hear where all the groups are at this point. People were very enthusiastic about their projects. There has been turnover in some of the groups, so they are looking for other people to fill roles on their grant teams.
- Open Education Presentation Development collaboration with NIU
- Larissa Garcia and Dee Anna are co-chairs of task force from NIU.
- NIU is interested in working with the OER Committee to develop programming about open pedagogy that could be presented to NIU Faculty, and then become a program that the committee offers similar to the CARLI OER Faculty Workshop.
- They are interested what open pedagogy actually looks like in the classroom.
- Michelle, Lauren, Dan, Dee Anna and Elizabeth would be interested in working on the project.
- This would take place during the Spring 2023 semester.
- Next steps to email with the people who volunteered to discuss moving forward.
- Elizabeth will send out links of samples
- Odigia
- CARLI has been asked about this company and asked if anyone on the committee was familiar with the company or had also been approached.
- They look to be an OpenStax ally.
- Per OpenStax, Fee to use is between $26-$40 per student.
- Committee discussed the need for ancillary materials and the effort needed to create. Also noted that there are few reviews available for the materials.
- The committee decided to discuss further at its next meeting.
