Tasks Assigned

  • Annette Alvarado will take meeting minutes.
  • Annette Alvarado, Daniel Matthews, Chris Sweet, and Anne Shelley volunteered to be instructors for the virtual train the trainer workshops.
  • Daniel Matthews and Annette Alvarado volunteered to work on the CARLI OER Faculty workshops.

Decisions

  • August meeting minutes approved.
  • Dan will keep an eye on the current legislation discussed during the meeting and update the committee as needed.
  • The Committee recommends that CARLI fund participants in the OEN Certificate in OER Librarianship program.

Discussion

  • The committee discussed a proposed legislative item that might include a requirement for open education al resources for K-12 schools. This was an item that was on the August agenda but not discussed at the previous meeting due to lack of time.
    • The current draft of the legislation would abolish history classes until materials were available to incorporate historical perspectives from those traditional not represented. A need for new class materials though is to work with that initiative. House Bill already encompasses a couple of pieces.
      • The committee discussed how would we support?
        • Members could offer to support to the process of the creation of OERor provide guidance.
        • To encourage that the resources created be open resources and that OER could be part of this process.
        • The committee might write a letter of support.
        • Next Step: Dan will keep an eye out on the draft legislation and provide updates to the committee.
  • Grants: United State Department of Education Open Textbook Pilot Grant
    • The call for proposals went out again.
    • CARLI Staff met with the Illinois Community College Board  and Vicky Cook of the University of Illinois at Springfield. Vicky had been part of a project that submitted a proposal for the first call.
      • Vicky has connected to University of Illinois System lobbyist, keeping close tabs on the call for proposal. The call was published in the Federal Register: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2020/09/15/2020-20379/applications-for-new-awards-fund-for-the-improvement-of-postsecondary-education-open-textbooks-pilot
      • It can be a three-year project; a maximum of 2 million dollars can be requested.
      • A number of priorities, in the notice of funding opportunity, and one of them is that a proposal come from a consortium.
      • CARLI believes they could have a strong application. It’s due in 60 days.
      • Anne suggest, first step be a brainstorm session via Zoom.
        • Hear from those that have read proposal.
        • Make it creative! Make it Innovative!
        • Wide spread support from many, how to get it, and to focus.
      • Janet giving a quick summary of the previous grant process to new committee members.
        • More accessibility guidelines on content, focused on technical or STEM.
        • Daniel Matthews suggests the proposal include open access 3D models.
      • CARLI staff will be  surveying members, asking for letters of support, and organizing the writing (the village to apply for the grant).
      • Give it background; send it to mail list, to invite Carli members for ideas.
      • Committee recommends a cloud document to record ideas for the session. Collect ideas before the session.
  • OER Commons Hub organization, OER Committee can advise.
  • Sponsorship of the Certificate in OER Librarianship
    • Would committee support CARLI providing support for members to attend again?
    • CARLI supported 5 participants last year after the OER Task Force recommended support to the CARLI Program Planning Committee.
    • Due to COVID-19, the 2020 program transitioned into a fully virtual format.
    • Are we going to recommend to support? Same level as last year? Yes
    • It will be virtual again, and registration fees have gone down.  Now it is $850, last year it was $1250.
    • Committee okay with recommending funding, all agreed yes.
    • Language used last year to promote can be reused.
    • CARLI Staff will confirm the financial end, and a draft will be run by the OER Committee, before sending it out to the CARLI Program Planning committee.
  • Volunteers for the Virtual Train-the-Trainer Workshops, the CARLI Virtual Course: Understanding and Promoting Open Educational Resources.
    • Sue and Janet are leading the program this month.
    • The curriculum is already developed.
    • Would members of the committee be willing to teach, three 75 minute sessions. (3 hours and 45 minutes)?
    • Daniel Matthews volunteers, as well as Chris Sweet, and Anne Shelley.
    • If any committee members would like to sit in on a session, the next one is next Tuesday at 1pm, and 29th at 1pm.
    • Dan recommends time between Thanksgiving and Christmas, may be best to show up and participate.
    • Elizabeth will send a poll to see dates/time availability.  Anyone on the committee interested in teaching can respond. Session portion preference as well.
  • Virtual Faculty Workshop Planning subcommittee.
    • These workshops would help jumpstart programs. The Board asked in March if trainings could be virtual environment.
    • Request for committee to provide input in developing the workshops.
    • Daniel Matthews volunteers. Annette Alvarado volunteers. Scheduling with Elizabeth.

The next committee meeting will be held on October 15, 2020 from 1-2pm.
