From The Decaturian (Millikin University) in CARLI Digital Collections Student newspapers are primary sources of information about historical times, replete with insights into the attitudes of budding intellectuals about events as they are happening. With a nod to Election Day, I’ve selected this issue of The Decaturian (Millikin University, in Decatur, Ill.) because the front page discusses the results of a student poll on the imminent 1928 presidential election. There’s a chart at the top of the page breaking down the results by student class and gender, flanked by articles analyzing the results. One observes that the Republican ratio of victory increases in each succeeding class from freshmen to seniors; a companion article reports that a majority of the faculty favor (Republican) Hoover. Draw your own conclusions about the influence of faculty attitudes on students. The digital collection home page makes it easy to navigate directly to relevant issues by date, and the issues are all keyword searchable. --Written by Mary Rose, Metadata Librarian at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
