From Railroads in the Midwest: Early Documents and Images (Knox College) in CARLI Digital Collections Who doesn’t love trains? They’re romantic, evocative of both adventure and nostalgia. Trains are about enjoying the journey. Navigating through the clickable subjects displayed with each image in the collection, I went on a journey of my own to write this week's blog post. Starting with a randomly chosen image, I clicked on “Railroad passenger cars” and viewed this photograph from among the results. I followed “Children” to an image of children looking at a derailed engine. “Railroad accidents” led me to a group portrait of accident survivors, including two men missing their right feet. The photograph above of children playing in a train was taken by Allen A. Green. The collection home page identifies him as the official photographer for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy (and a Knox College alum). The view out the window makes this image especially attractive to me; plus I liked the old-fashioned costumes/hair-pulling tableau.
