CARLI Senior Program Coordinator for E-resources, Mary Burkee, will retire from CARLI on September 29. Mary is retiring after many years of service to the library community as a part of CARLI, ILCSO, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We wish her many years of happy, healthy retirement.
CARLI staff are hard at work with our calendar year vendors and are planning to open the CY18 selection system on October 9th. As in the past, pricing and renewal commitments for our three journal bundles with Sage, Springer and Wiley, will be managed directly with the libraries outside of the selection system and CARLI staff will add these commitments to the system after it closes on or about November 1st.
Our current agreement with AAAS for the Science titles is ending and we are in negotiations on a new agreement. We will provide updates on those negotiations as they progress.
As a result of the Springer-Nature renewal, significant changes are taking place with our agreements for the Springer and Nature content. Current subscribers will receive a message next week with more information about those changes.

The CARLI Last Copy Program has accepted last copies of monographs for several years now with over 2100 submissions during FY17. In response to questions about expanding the program, CARLI is asking members if they would be willing to accept non-print last copy materials into their collections.
If you have questions or are willing to accept non-print materials as last copies, please send a message to Elizabeth Clarage.
Reviewing submissions does not mean that your institution must accept an item. Your institution may identify the types of materials that it would be willing to review and retain as the last copy for the consortium.
Possible formats:
Please review the requirements for institutions that accept an item as a Last Copy and contact us if you are interested in participating.
CARLI officially joined the Open Textbook Network (OTN) in June 2017. To support participation in the OTN, the CARLI Board of Directors has approved a charge for an Open Educational Resources Task Force (OERTF).
The task force is comprised of System Leaders (attendees of the Open Textbook Network Summer Institute) and staff from CARLI members already using OERs.
The members of the task force are:
In addition to supporting CARLI′s participation in the Open Textbook Network, the task force will encourage cooperation and collaboration on open education resources, and will identify and develop materials about OERs for libraries′ use with their institutions. This work will include the planning and delivery of statewide training about OERs, the creation of an ″Open Illinois″ CARLI initiative, and the development of web resources related to Open Educational Resources.
The ″Open Illinois″ concept is intended to unite action and thought around OERs in CARLI and to keep discussion focused around the topic of OERs broadly. So far, in addition to the membership in the OTN, the OERTF has sketched out the need for:
The OERTF members are developing local institutional training so that they will be able to provide quality training opportunities for CARLI library staff members, sharing resources and processes that have worked in their local environment. They are planning to have resources available to the membership by early 2018. In-person, train-the-trainer workshops from the Open Textbook Network will be available the week of April 23, 2018. CARLI will be sharing more about this training soon.
CARLI staff and task force members will be presenting a program at the Illinois Library Association′s Annual Conference on October 11 with the intent of increasing awareness and gaining feedback about needs and expectations.
If your organization has open educational resources that you would like to contribute to the Open Illinois website (currently under development), please send those to Elizabeth Clarage via CARLI support.

The OER Task Force is seeking information from staff at CARLI member libraries about what your institutions are currently doing regarding the use of open educational resources for teaching and learning. We encourage all CARLI members to complete the survey, even if your institution does not currently use or plan to use open educational resources so that we have an accurate representation of the entire consortium. Please share this survey with others within your library as multiple responses per institution are welcome.
CARLI plans to share information gathered with its members including at the CARLI Update during the Illinois Library Association Annual Conference.
If you have any questions, please contact CARLI support.

With the change to the new ProQuest Ebook Central platform in June 2017, CARLI member libraries can now provide anonymous and guest access for on campus users. While browsing material within the collection, those on campus do not need to log in.
If you would like to set this up for your institution, please contact ProQuest Ebook Support and provide your campus IPs.
It is time once again to collect the dates that your location will be closed for the upcoming holiday season. Please complete the survey no later than October 5 so that there is ample time for us to share this information with the delivery vendor.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding ILDS, please send an email CARLI support.
If you′ve followed along for the past three years, the CARLI Preservation Committee′s motto could be considered ″Slow and steady wins the Preservation Race″! In response to the results from the 2015 CARLI Preservation Survey, the Preservation Committee has focused its resources on the explicit needs of CARLI members with annual projects about Audiovisual Preservation, and Disaster Planning. This year, the Committee will focus our efforts on Communicating the Value of Preservation.
Starting in October, members of the Preservation Committee will be sharing preservation articles on communication, training and/or funding for the following topics: environmental monitoring, disaster preparedness, library staff, student workers, users, facilities personnel, library administrators, other institutions, finances for preservation, and the CARLI Last Copy Program. These individual articles will be added to the Communicating the Value of Preservation page throughout the year as a single point of reference.
