As in previous years, we will keep the volunteer list on file for any additional openings that may occur throughout the year. We offer our sincere thanks to all those who volunteered to serve on CARLI committees.

At Loyola University Chicago School of Social Work something new and exciting is coming this Fall 2019 semester. The school is offering a bilingual MSW in Social Work, where 90% of the coursework will be done in Spanish, but 100% online.
I am bilingual, thanks to my mother who is from Guadalajara, Mexico. Due to this the Social Work Librarian, Susan Wardzala, asked me to partner with her in finding resources vital to the curriculum of the program in Spanish. Through some meetings with the instructors I was able to put together a LibGuide, with a page emphasizing Spanish Open Educational Resources. It was very exciting to research and see that in Latin America and Spain there are many Open Access repositories, some by universities and others by organizations.
The LibGuide is still in draft form, but I would like to share, because if there are any other resources you are familiar with please contact me. I would love to add more, otherwise feel free to share and use the resources I have put together. Here is the link: http://libguides.luc.edu/trabajosocial/accesoabierto.
During the month of May, the DePaul University librarians strengthened their efforts to increase awareness of open educational resources (OERs) on two fronts.
First, Kindra Morelock and Sue Shultz presented a PechaKucha titled Open Textbooks: Myths, Debunked at DePaul’s annual Teaching and Learning Conference for faculty and instructors. The high-energy presentation style allowed Kindra and Sue to persuasively present key issues and statistics about the high cost of textbooks and dispel five common myths about open textbooks.
The second effort was the launch of two separate surveys designed to gather data about the impact of textbook costs on DePaul students and gauge awareness and use of OERs by DePaul faculty. Stay tuned for news about our analysis of both surveys later this summer.

Libraries are increasingly constrained for space as book stacks reach capacity. Even libraries who have been fortunate enough to build off site storage facilities are rapidly filling them faster than anticipated. Inevitably, they must face the need to evaluate collections and weed in order to free up space. This need is balanced against what we must retain for the support of the teaching and research missions of our institutions. With the pressure to retain resources combined with the burden of space, libraries must decide what to retain and what to de-accession.
