Register for Free People Read Freely: Literacy, Inclusion, and Democracy

University of Illinois System President Tim Killeen proudly invites you to a celebration of scholarship and the role of education in our democracy. The symposium "Free People Read Freely: Literacy, Inclusion, and Democracy" will feature speakers, panels, and more, on topics including book banning, censorship, and the importance of reading and books to fostering public dialogue, inclusion, and engaged citizenship. The symposium will be held August 20-21 at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and the I Hotel and Illinois Conference Center, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. There is no charge to attend but registration is required.

An opening keynote conversation will feature authors Clint Smith, author of the narrative nonfiction book, "How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning With the History of Slavery Across America", which was a #1 New York Times bestseller, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction, and selected by the New York Times as one of the 10 best books of 2021; and George M. Johnson, New York Times bestselling author of "All Boys Aren’t Blue" and "We Are Not Broken", one of the 2022 TIME100 Next, TIME‘s annual list of rising stars, as well as one of Out’s 100 Most Influential LGBTQ People. Ruby Mendenhall, the Kathryn Lee Baynes Dallenbach Professor in Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois, and Urbana Poet Laureate will moderate the conversation. The second day will open with a keynote from writer, activist, and Professor Tony Diaz, who led the 2012 Librotraficante Caravan to smuggle banned books back into Arizona in defiance of the state's ban of Mexican American studies at that time. The symposium will also feature alumni of the Education Justice Project sharing their views about reading freely.

University of Illinois System units the University of Illinois Press and the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois will present the event.

Attendees may register for only the welcome and opening keynote on August 20, or for the full 2-day symposium. For the detailed agenda or to register visit the event page..

CARLI Committee Appointments and Annual Reports

The appointment process for the 2024-2025 CARLI committees is now complete!

Staff from fifty-five member libraries will serve on CARLI Committees in 2024-2025. As in previous years, we will keep the volunteer list on file for any additional openings that may occur this year. We offer our sincere thanks to all those who volunteered to serve on the CARLI committees. To review the committee charges and rosters, visit the Committee Directory in the Governance section of the CARLI web site.

We also encourage you to view the committee's annual reports. The reports detail the activities of each committee and give a big picture of their collaborative efforts.

CARLI's committees play a vital role in the ongoing success of the organization, and the service of all our volunteers maintains the tradition of commitment to developing and maintaining quality programs and services that enhance CARLI′s reputation in Illinois and beyond.

The efforts of CARLI committee members provide a critical service to the organization and to all Illinois libraries, and we offer our thanks and deep appreciation for their service.

Denise Green to Retire from CARLI

Project Director Workshops

Managing OER Projects

This workshop is designed to help Project Directors develop plans, meet deadlines, and manage multiple OER projects.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in OER

Part I: OER and DEI: Social Justice on Your College Campus (1.5 hours)

How could DEI topics, such as equitable access, raise the quality of assignments, discussions, and group projects in your course? What have you had to do to amend traditionally published material to become relevant to your course? Your students? Your community? In this two-part workshop, we will explore the opportunities to use OER to highlight DEI opportunities in your courseware material, using OEP. This discussion will include OER as a social justice tool, examples of Open Pedagogy and a workshop assignment using evidence-based teaching practices.

Part II: OER, DEI + Open Pedagogy: How and Where to Begin? (1.5 hours)

Open pedagogy, also known as open educational practices (OEP), is the use of OER to support learning, or the open sharing of teaching practices with a goal of improving education and training at the institutional, professional, and individual level. OEP positions students as content creators, not just consumers, and guides them to understanding their responsibility as global citizens and contributors to the knowledge commons.
