The CARLI staff continue to work with the five "Vanguard" institutions on a rapid test migration. The Vanguard process will run through July 2019 and will be followed by a full test migration for all 91 I-Share institutions, and finally, a production load and cutover to Alma and Primo VE in June 2020 for all I-Share libraries. The five Vanguard libraries are North Central College, the Newberry Library, SIU Carbondale, UI Chicago, and UI Urbana-Champaign.
During April, the Vanguards completed the Alma Migration Form which gathers information about a library′s cataloging and acquisitions practices and settings. They also completed a process that Ex Libris calls "P2E" which identifies all of the e-resource bib records that a library has in Voyager. The outcome of the P2E process is that these e-resources will be able to be managed as e-resources in Alma with features such as license terms and activation settings that are not applicable to physical materials. The Vanguards also finished work on the migration information from their various link resolver systems-SFX, EBSCO Full Text Finder, and 360.
The Vanguards and CARLI are now working on the Alma Configuration Form which gathers information about circulation policies, locations, patron types, service desks, and more. Ex Libris will take these completed forms and data extracts and build an Alma database and Primo VE for each Vanguard library in May. CARLI will also be working with Ex Libris to build an Alma Network Zone (a consortial union catalog and service for sharing data and policies).
The Vanguard process is used by Ex Libris for large organizations like CARLI where it is helpful to have early experience with the migration and implementation process before beginning work with all participating libraries. The process is intentionally fast paced and the Vanguard library staff and CARLI office staff have been working hard to keep on schedule while learning as we go. The CARLI staff are very grateful to the Vanguard institutions for being willing to go through this process with us, as it is a great learning experience, if somewhat intimidating in pace and scope.
Even if your institution is not a Vanguard library, you can and should be starting to get ready for our move to Alma and Primo VE in 2019-2020. An FAQ, links to Ex Libris′ training resources, and more are available on the CARLI Alma & Primo VE information page. All of the Ex Libris training materials are online and no login is required to access them. On April 2, CARLI hosted a forum on planning for change. The forum handout provides an introduction to many of these training resources and is available here.
CARLI is pleased to announce that beginning July 1, 2019 EBSCO′s Academic Search Complete will again be fully funded by CARLI for all Governing member libraries. Academic Search Complete was selected after a lengthy RFP process and was chosen based on the depth, breadth and value of the content being offered.
Academic Search Complete offers 6,415 full-text titles covering a broad range of subject areas. It will continue to be the cornerstone of the CARLI Aggregated Database Program, which is designed to provide a set of baseline full-text electronic journal resources and to provide the broadest possible content to support undergraduate education. In addition, the CARLI agreement with EBSCO also includes full funding of the following products:
The license agreement with EBSCO will cover the period July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2021, with the option to exercise renewal years through June 30, 2029.
The FY20 selection cycle includes options for libraries to subscribe to upgraded version of Academic Search (Ultimate) and Business Source collections (Complete or Ultimate) at discounted pricing reflecting the value of the CARLI funded subscriptions.
CARLI will be working with EBSCO and Ex Libris during the migration from Voyager to Alma to maximize the interoperability of the two systems’ discovery functionality.
If you have questions or need additional information please send a note to CARLI Support.
The CARLI E-Resources Selection System is open for FY20 subscription commitments now through May 24. If you have any questions about working with the system or the products being offered for FY20 please send a note to CARLI Support.
CARLI is happy to announce the addition of two new vendors in the fiscal cycle: Bloomsbury and InfoBase Holdings. Bloomsbury is offering 29 new titles. InfoBase / Films on Demand is offering 39 new video collections.

The CARLI Digital Collections server migration to the OCLC-hosted CONTENTdm environment was successfully completed on April 10, 2019. More information about the migration can be found here.
As we previously announced, OCLC discontinued support for locally-run CONTENTdm servers like CARLI′s. This migration was necessary so that CARLI can continue to receive support and upgrades to our CONTENTdm software.

Whether it′s photographs, cards, newspaper clippings, pressed flowers, or drawings, people have been collecting materials and keepsakes in book form for centuries. Scrapbooks are unique items, as they often draw on the experiences of the creator of the scrapbook and tell a personal story.
Over the years, scrapbooks have evolved by using what materials are available to the maker. Jennifer Teper describes in her article, An Introduction to Preservation Challenges and Potential Solutions for Scrapbooks in Archival Collections, how calling cards, signatures and photographs were collected in the 1850s and by 1900 scrapbooks were introduced "as a popular format." In the early 1870s, Mark Twain, also a scrapbooker, invented a self-pasting scrapbook available to consumers. Teper also explains that a heyday for scrapbooking was between 1920 and 1970.[i] In the early 2000s, scrapbooking experienced a resurgence. Different materials throughout various periods of history require varying approaches to scrapbook preservation.
For more information on various characteristics of scrapbooks, their conservation and preservation challenges and considerations, and overall care within your collection, please read the full article.
Be sure to read other articles in the Beyond the Book series, a year-long project of the CARLI Preservation Committee.
