Decisions

  • Minutes of the March 8, 2024, Governance Board meeting were approved prior to the meeting.
  • Rachelle Stivers was selected as the 2024-2025 Vice-chair/Chair-elect.
  • The Board approved the meeting schedule for 2024-2025.
  • Appointments to Board committees are complete:
    • Finance: Carolyn Ciesla, Dennis Krieb, Dallas Long, Matt Ostercamp
    • Personnel: Rachelle Stivers, Matt Ostercamp, Geoff Pettys, Dennis Krieb
    • Program Planning: Stephanie Davis-Kahl, Dennis Krieb, and Pattie Piotrowski

  • The Board approved the charge for the new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. 
  • The meeting was adjourned at 1:36 p.m.

Announcements

  • Results of the 2024 Governance Board election were announced. Directors elected to 3-year terms are: Stefanie Bluemle (Augustana College), Dallas Long (Illinois State University), and Rachelle Stivers (Heartland Community College). Directors appointed to one-year terms are: Brian Keith (Eastern Illinois University), Sarah McHone-Chase (Aurora University), and Frances Whaley (Kishwaukee College. 
  • The Board thanked outgoing members Jo Cates (Columbia College Chicago), Shannon Pohrte (Elgin Community College), Devon Powell (South Suburban College), Sharon Silverman (City Colleges of Chicago), Claire Stewart (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign), and Nathan Thebarge (Trinity International University).
  • The 2024 CARLI New Directors Institute was held May 22- 23 with twelve directors in attendance. 
  • Registration for the Free People Read Freely Symposium will be open on or before June 24. CARLI staff are planning this symposium along with the University of Illinois President’s Office and the U of I Press to celebrate intellectual freedom. The symposium is being held on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on August 20- 21, 2024.
  • The FY24 E-resources Selection Cycle, which was open during May, saw a 2% decrease in spending and an 8% decrease in the number of subscriptions. Five schools increased their spending by 20% or more, while five schools decreased their spending by at least 20%. These numbers were affected this year by school closings at Lincoln Christian and Oak Point at a loss of 15 subscriptions and $54,565.
  • Denise Green, a Senior Library Service Coordinator at CARLI, will retire from CARLI in November 2024.
  • CARLI has completed its contract with Consortia Manager. We are starting implementation for the fall CY25 selection cycle.
  • CARLI staff have finalized FY25 book agreements with Wiley, Oxford University Press, and University of Illinois Press for access to consortial ebooks.
  • CARLI Staff will be applying for a No Cost Extension (NCE) for the Illinois SCOERs grant.
  • New I-Share Libraries; Chicago Theological Seminary, City Colleges of Chicago, College of Lake County, Elgin Community College, and Prairie State College will go live on June 26.
  • Three CARLI members will participate in the Western Regional Storage Trust (WEST) shared serials storage starting July 1, 2024.
  • CARLI staff forwarded recommendations to the Illinois State Library for funding for OER Grants for 28 Illinois academic library applicants. The Illinois State Library approved funding for all 28 recommended applications for a total of approximately $3.1 million. 
  • The CARLI Scholarship Committee has selected recipients for the 2024-2025 school year. The recipients are Amanda Helm, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library; Grace Kraus, Prairie State College; Quinn Sluzenski, Newberry Library; Michelle Thole, Greenville University; and Alexandria Vlahos, Lewis & Clark Community College. The Professional Development Alliance has offered 115 continuing education opportunities to CARLI libraries this year, including 22 CARLI hosted events.
  • PASCAL (Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries) has joined the Professional Development Alliance.
  • CARLI staff have completed an agreement with Ex Libris to allow for unlimited named users in Alma. The subsequent cost will be absorbed by CARLI for FY25 and FY26. 
  • CARLI staff have completed the preliminary tasks involved with implementing anonymization of Alma users that was approved by the Board in March. The change will be enabled in Alma on July 29, 2024.
  • The Shared IR project has been placed on indefinite hiatus.
  • The Board accepted the CARLI Committee Annual Reports and thanked them for their good work. 
  • CARLI will hold the 2024 Governing Directors Meeting and the Annual Meeting at the I Hotel in Champaign on Tuesday, October 22.

Tasks Assigned:

  • CARLI staff will contact the Theosophical Society of America for more information about their application for CARLI membership. A board vote will take place by email following review of the additional information.
  • CARLI staff will complete the Building Diversity Graduate Assistantship host arrangements. 
  • CARLI staff will work with each Board member to schedule a brief presentation about their institution at the 2024-25 meetings.
  • CARLI staff will schedule listening sessions at venues around the state for CARLI directors to share their current needs and concerns. 
  • CARLI staff will contact the Board for three volunteers to serve on the newly established Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.
