From the Letters Received by the Powell Survey 1869-1879 (Illinois Wesleyan University) Collection in CARLI Digital Collections.

This collection contains letters sent to John Wesley Powell between 1869 and 1879, the years during which he explored the Grand Canyon and headed up what became The Geographical and Geological Survey of the Rocky Mountain Region, or the Powell Survey. This letter was sent from South Royalton, Vermont by N.D. Howland and is dated 10-03-1869. The image is reproduced courtesy of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and The Ames Library at Illinois Wesleyan University.
