Assistant/Associate Professor & Information Services and Liaison Librarian (Liaison to Medicine) – University of Illinois Chicago

The University Library of the University of Illinois Chicago seeks a creative and service-oriented liaison librarian to provide clinical information support to the UI Health System and the College of Medicine's (COM) clinical educational and research initiatives. This tenure-track position is situated within the Information Services and Research (ISR) Department of the Library of the Health Sciences; the ISR Department consists of Library liaisons to each of the six health sciences colleges on the West side of campus.

The College of Medicine (COM) liaison, as a member of the COM liaison team, will advocate for the needs of the college and UI Health System, design instructional materials, support research initiatives, and offer feedback on collection development decisions. The successful candidate will be the Library's primary point of contact with clinicians, residents, and fellows in the UI Health System in Chicago, and will collaborate with liaisons to the College of Medicine programs in Chicago as well as regional programs in Peoria and Rockford.  As a member of the ISR team, the successful candidate will also support general reference and instruction services, in both virtual and face-to-face settings.

This tenure-track appointment includes the expectation that the faculty member will be actively engaged in and significantly contribute to the profession through research/scholarship and service related to professional and scholarly interests. This includes publication, presentation, and committee work at various levels. Support for scholarship and professional development, including funding, research leave, and mentoring, are provided to foster candidate success. This position currently offers a hybrid work schedule.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Establish collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, residents, and fellows in the College of Medicine and UI Health System.
  • Conduct one-on-one and small-group research consultations.
  • Contribute to collection development decisions for physical and online health sciences collections.
  • Partner with liaisons to the College of Medicine programs in Chicago, Peoria and Rockford.
  • Engage with clinical Grand Rounds or other research and instructional activities throughout the College of Medicine.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge (e.g. Artificial Intelligence in health care and medical education, Evidence-Based Medicine, Systematic Reviews, etc.) by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; and establishing professional networks.
  • Provide general reference and instruction support for health sciences users, both virtual and face-to-face.
  • Conduct expert searching of library databases and point-of-care tools, including conducting mediated literature searches on behalf of UI Health clinicians.
  • Develop online instructional materials (e.g. tutorials, research guides, integrating library services into Blackboard).
  • Perform special projects and other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (or from a master's level program in library and information studies accredited or recognized by the appropriate national body of another country). 
  • Two years' experience in health sciences librarianship, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet the requirements in scholarly research and publication, professional service, and librarianship commensurate with a tenure system appointment at UIC.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to working collaboratively with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with diverse users and actively promote library services and resources in a rapidly moving information environment.
  • Evidence of good judgment, self-motivation, and customer service orientation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and/or experience in clinical medicine or working in a clinical environment.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in the field of biomedical informatics.

Salary/Rank/Contract:

The minimum salary for a full-time twelve-month tenure-track appointment is $71,500. Benefits for a twelve month appointment include 24 days vacation; 12 days annual sick leave with additional disability benefits; 11 paid holidays; medical insurance (contribution based on annual salary; coverage for dependents may be purchased); two dental plans available; life insurance paid for by the State; participation in one of the retirement options of the State Universities Retirement System compulsory (8% of salary is withheld and is tax exempt until withdrawal); no Social Security coverage, but Medicare payment is required. This appointment is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois and UIC United Faculty Local 6456, IFT-AFT, AAUP.
